Childhood Cancer Support helps keep families of a child with cancer together as kids can't fight cancer alone. Childhood Cancer Support has a unique and essential job providing much needed practical, financial, social and emotional support to help families cope with the challenges of having a child with cancer. More than 600 Australian children being diagnosed with cancer each year, three children will die from cancer every week and 1/3 of children diagnosed will relapsing in their first 18months of treatment. Childhood Cancer Support is the only nonprofit organisation working throughout QLD, NSW and NT that specialises in working with families who have a child with any form of cancer. For 37 years Childhood Cancer Support’s mission has been to offer families accommodation at no cost while their child receives treatment, and provide friendship and support during and after their cancer journey - their home away from home with others who are travelling along the same journey.

The Lions Eye Institute (LEI) has posted a number of remarkable breakthroughs in its drive to achieve its mission – prevent and cure blindness and eye disease.   LEI’s achievements include: Gene therapy research which in 2005 was recognised by the National Health and Medical Research Council as one of their “10 of the Best” publicly funded research projects, and is now translating into treatment for macular degeneration  Development of retinal bypass surgery – a laser treatment that creates bypasses around blockages in the retinal vein to restore sight in those affected Development of the world’s first dissolvable glaucoma tube for microsurgery to control glaucoma Design of a robotics ultra-microsurgical system which will allow surgical treatments currently limited by the tremor of a surgeon’s hand NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence for the Translation of Genetic Eye Research. Our activities are underpinned by a continuous improvement program and worldwide collaborative research. The Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation funds medical research into the cause, prevention, treatment and cure of leukaemia and other diseases treatable by bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. Arrow currently supports critical research into how microRNA genes contribute to the uncontrolled growth and immature features which are hallmarks of leukaemia. This year, Arrow awarded four PhD scholarships in support of research into leukaemia and stem cell transplantation; and six nursing scholarships to nurses wanting to further their education in the field of blood cancers with the College of Nursing. Arrow also supports patients through accommodation, education, travel assistance and a free Wig Library for patients experiencing hair loss through chemotherapy.

The National Stem Cell foundation of Australia (NSCFA) was established in mid-2011 as the follow-on organisation from the Australian Stem Cell Centre. It is a public company limited by guarantee (ABN: 84 152 713 098) that has been endorsed by the ATO as a charitable body with deductible gift recipient status.   Its mission is to promote the study and use of stem cells in the prevention or control of disease in human beings and to enhance public education in this field.   The NSCFA was established by the Australian Stem Cell Centre to carry on the work that the Centre started. When the Centre had reached the end of its Government funding cycle, it was essential the money raised continued to be directed towards stem cell research and public education. The NSCFA was set up to continue to fund the development of stem cell technology, and increase public awareness.   Provide resources for the Australian public on stem cell technology and regenerative medicine including its risks, achievements, benefits and overall technical progress. Pursue cures for, as yet untreatable diseases, using stem cell technology and regenerative medicine. This is reached by supporting research activities in these areas. We achieve these aims by pursuing charitable purposes only, and using donations received to promote these activities.

Six babies will be born today with Childhood Heart Disease (CHD). It is the most common birth abnormality and the leading cause of death in young children in Australia under the age of 5, accounting for more than 30% of all childhood deaths. CHD takes more lives than all other childhood diseases combined. HeartKids SA provide support to children who are born with or acquire CHD, many of whom undergo life-giving heart surgery. We strive to bring hope and understanding to their families as they navigate their way through very difficult journeys.
