Oaktree is young people leading a movement to end poverty. Extreme poverty has already been halved and together we can end it. Breaking it down, Oaktree works in three ways. One, we raise awareness about extreme poverty in Australia, because movements need widespread public support. This is our social impact. Two, we fundraise to work with local organisations that directly tackle poverty overseas. And three, we influence policy change by ensuring Australia’s leaders take action to end poverty. For us, change starts with a simple belief - that extreme poverty is unacceptable. Beliefs turn into action, and enough informed action will end extreme poverty in our lifetime. Young people have the unique ability to build and lead this movement. Oaktree is Australia’s largest youth-run organisation with over 150,000 members.

Hands Across the Water (AU, 78774995987) Browse events

YTD Raised: $0.00

In 2004, countless Thai children were left alone and homeless by the Boxing Day tsunami.   Hands founder, former police forensic specialist Peter Baines, working with the tsunami disaster victim identification team, was deeply touched by the number of children left homeless and alone by the natural disaster. He was inspired to establish an organisation that could make a difference.   In late 2005, a team of committed individuals with the desire to help others formed Hands Across The Water.   Hands Across the Water is a boutique Australian charity that gives at-risk Thai children and their communities a helping hand.   Our projects are tailored to meet local communities’ needs – for the long term. The work we do is focused on improving the lives of the kids and their communities today and in the future.   In our first 6 years, we’ve raised more than $7 million without spending a cent of donors’ money on administration or marketing.   Building our first orphanage, Baan Tharn Namchai In 2004, we initially supported 32 kids who had lost their parents and were living in a tent at Baan Tharn Namchai (BTN) in Phang-Nga, a town on Thailand’s northern Andaman coast. The kids were left without food, shelter or support.   Hands, along with a number of equally committed supporters pooled their resources to build the first orphanage at Barn Tharn Namchai. Our director, Khun Rotjana, led the centre. Baan Tharn Namchai was opened in August 2006. We added a girls-only building, in January 2009.   Today, Baan Tharn Namchai is home to 74 children and 12 bouncing babies.   We support hundreds of children in multiple locations across Thailand: Baan Tharn Namchai Home Hug Yasothon Centre The New Life Project at Kanchanaburi The New Life Project at Chumpon Baan Nam Khem community centre and tsunami refuge Chanthaburi Centre (PAMA House) Chiang Mai Centre (coming soon) We have centres and projects in northern Thailand outside Chiang Mai, in the west at Kanchanaburi, Yasothon in the north-east, outside of Surat Thani at Chumpon, several hundred kilometres south of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok and at Chanthaburi near the Cambodian border.

The RFS is responsible for the prevention, mitigation and suppression of firs and the protection of life and property. Operations describes the preparation for and response to incidents that RFS volunteers attend across the State.   The RFS is the lead agency for coordinated bush fire fighting and is also responsible for fires and related emergency incidents within Rural Fire Districts which cover more than 95% of the State. Fires and related emergency incidents include bush and grass fires, structure fires, transport fires and incidents, automatic fire alarms, etc.   The RFS also supports other agencies in emergency situations such as floods, storms and search and rescue situations.  A range of operational systems, resources and skills come together to ensure the RFS delivers an efficient, effective response to incidents within its operational responsibilities. Over 100 years ago the residents of the south-western New South Wales township of Berrigan formed Australia's first official bush fire brigade. The resident's joined together as firefighters for mutual protection against the ever-present threat of bushfires. On 1 September 1997, The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) was established by an act of Parliament as the successor to the first bush fire brigade, redefining the world's largest fire service and building on a century of experience in protecting some of the most fire-prone areas on earth. Today the Service comprises over 2,100 volunteer rural fire brigades with a total membership of just over 70,000. In addition, salaried staff are employed to manage the day to day operations of the Service at Headquarters, regional offices and district fire control centres.
