(UK, 1087295) Browse eventsAchieving the balance – between human development and wildlife and habitat conservation – in a country with the world’s third highest population growth rate is critical. This is the aim of the Uganda Conservation Foundation. Working with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), UCF aims to sensitise communities and demonstrate through practical projects how people can gain financial benefits from conservation. UCF’s current challenge is assisting UWA in the recovery of the 400km² Dura sector north of Lake George, where wildlife has literally been wiped out by poaching. The Dura project is an extension of the successful Waterways project, which is combating ivory poaching, bushmeat smoking, live animal trafficking and illegal fishing across Lakes Edward, George and Albert. Other successful projects include measures to reduce elephant crop raiding. Since the excavation of 30km trenches and erection of 13 elephant fences no retaliatory killings of elephants have been reported. Farmers are now harvesting their crops, allowing children to attend secondary school rather than guard crops, proving that simple low-tech solutions can make a massive difference to rural communities’ quality of life. Inspired by his long term partner during one of his daily visits to the spinal unit, Marrianne’s partner Andy decided they should start a trust. A trust that would not only mirror Marrianne’s desire for progress, but a trust that would help her to reach goals and ultimately help others who have been affected by the devastation that spinal cord injury brings. In 2005 The Rooprai Spinal Trust was born, a completely voluntary organisation. Today we offer 'scholarships' to others with Spinal Cord Injury to participate in active based physio and Marrianne's progress continues to inspire many.

(UK, 1173755) Browse eventsKawasaki disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in the UK and the western world. It's time we changed that. We have an enormous task to do. But we are going to do it. TOGETHER we will. Join us and help us protect tiny hearts. You can make a difference. Awareness of this often pernicious disease is currently poor. Slow diagnosis and delayed treatment of Kawasaki Disease can cause serious, life-long health issues. Children affected by Kawasaki Disease have excellent chances of a good recovery with timely diagnosis and the correct treatment. At Societi we know that recognising Kawasaki Disease early is THE transformational opportunity to prevent what can be devastating effects from Kawasaki Disease. Kawasaki Disease has lots of symptoms in common with other childhood illnesses so it is often misdiagnosed - this means lifelong heart damage for too many children. Each year in the UK there are more cases of Kawasaki Disease than bacterial meningitis! Everyone would spot meningitis and know what to do, because of brilliant awareness raising work by MRT. We need everyone to recognise Kawasaki Disease too.
