Dreams for Children (UK, 1162724) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Dreams really can come true. But for some people, it definitely means so much more. Dreams for children is a new charity that makes the wishes of children fighting life-threatening illness in Merseyside happen. We do this by working hard to raise money in order to see dreams come to life, creating the most special days for the most special people and ensuring that they have amazing experiences that help ease suffering. We also support families coping with the serious illness of a child through our support network. The charity was set up in memory of Catherine Strickland, who passed away in July 2013 aged just 12. Catherine died from a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma, after fighting bravely for 2 years. Before she passed away, her family rallied around to make her remaining time as special as possible, where Dreams for Children co-founder Emma Strickland – Catherine’s aunt – was instrumental in arranging several special days for her most special of nieces. Our aim is to make sure as many other children as possible also have the chance to see their wishes become a reality because, as everyone knows, the best dreams are the ones that come true. Yorkshire Brain Research Centre (UK, 1075308a) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation is launching a new Brain Research Appeal in January 2014 to raise £2million by 2015. The fundraising appeal will create a world-class Yorkshire Brain Research Centre to help tackle life-limiting brain conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and dementia. Currently 1 in 6 adults suffer from diseases of the brain and there is an expectation that with an ageing population brain conditions will be a ticking time bomb. Professor Selby who helped write the case for the new Yorkshire Brain Research Centre said, “As the population gets older, there will be a significant increase in brain conditions in Yorkshire in the near future. To have a centre of excellence for brain research at Leeds means that patients do not have to travel out of the County. The Centre will conduct research for patient benefit and will help Yorkshire scientists find new treatments and drug therapies as well as conduct clinical trials.” Dr Helen Ford, Consultant Neurologist said “This is an exciting time for brain research with many new discoveries in treatments for neurological conditions. The Yorkshire Brain Research Centre will help attract the very best clinicians from around the world to train and study at Leeds and grow a strong neurosciences community for the benefit of patients in Yorkshire and beyond.” The Yorkshire Brain Research Centre will mean we will have better diagnosis, better treatment and better outcomes for patients in Yorkshire.

Life After AML (UK, Life) Browse events

Life After AML aims to help Leukaemia and other blood cancer patients in North West of England hospital haematology wards by:providing equipment to help improve the treatment, comfort and wellbeing of hospital patients.providing equipment to aid the physical fitness of hospital patientspromoting a positive attitude amongst patients and relatives.increasing public awareness of AML, Leukaemia and Stem Cell Transplants Ron was treated for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) with two intense courses of chemotherapy in Blackpool Victoria Hospital followed by more chemotherapy and a Stem Cell Transplant (kindly donated by his brother, Jim) in Manchester Royal Infirmary in the latter half of 2014.During his 10 weeks in hospital Ron realised that, whilst the doctors and nurses did an amazing job, patients could also help themselves by keeping as physically fit as possible.  Also, because most patients with similar ailments would spend at least 4 weeks in hospital for each round of chemo, anything to help the comfort of patients and promote a positive attitude would greatly improve their chances of survival.Yes, there can be Life after AML (and other cancers)!Ron was helped in his spell in Blackpool Victoria by the weather which allowed him to maintain a little fitness by taking walks in the park next to the hospital with his wife, Gillian.  It was a different story in Manchester because the Stem Cell Transplant meant isolation in a room which took 15 paces to walk round! So, the Life After AML charity was born - to help aid the physical fitness, comfort and positive attitude of patients
