(UK, 1173589) Browse eventsThe PTEN Research Foundation was launched in early 2017 to accelerate research that could lead to a therapy for PHTS (PTEN Hamartoma Tumour Syndrome). What is PHTS?PHTS is a rare condition caused by mutations in the PTEN gene which is crucial for maintaining control over cell and tissue growth. The main symptoms are an increased risk of cancer, in particular breast, thyroid, kidney and endometrial, as well as neurodevelopmental delay and an increased incidence of autism. How will we achieve our mission? There is no cure or treatment for PHTS and awareness of the condition is relatively low, presenting significant challenges to patients, families and clinicians alike. Our ambition is to build and work with the community around PHTS, engaging leaders in the fields of research and clinical care, to collaborate, and identify research projects and potential treatments that will lead to effective therapies. We fund academic and clinical research projects, and we provide support for building networks between clinicians, researchers, corporate partners and patients. (UK, 1034587) Browse eventsWYPCS is run by a dedicated committee of volunteers and we employ trained counsellors to support the young people who access our services. This helps us to keep our running costs to a minimum and concentrate our expenditure on service provision, making sure that the maximum benefit is extracted for all monies invested. The service is free and confidential and can be accessed by any young person in emotional difficulty. Common problems we encounter include family and relationship difficulties, issues regarding loneliness and anxiety, problems associated with low self esteem and bullying, self harm, abuse, distress through bereavement or loss, depression and difficulty with decision making. Many young people are referred via their local GP, but clients are also able, and encouraged, to access the service through self-referral. We provide locally accessible counselling support for young people where early intervention will reduce the need for specialist Primary or Secondary Care service input at a later stage. A key aim of the service is to tackle and address issues at an early stage. We see this as crucial support to allow them to focus on the many social and educational demands placed upon them at this important time in their life. Maintaining and developing educational and social achievement provides considerable benefits as young people continue to work towards long-term goals, gaining improved quality of life.

We provide temporary and permanent homes to around 50-100 cats at any one time. When rehoming our cats, we always try to ensure a good match between the new owners and the requirements of the cat and consider factors such as the location, the home environment and the personality and needs of the cat. We take in cats and kittens and provide them with a safe and warm environment, and all essential vet treatment including neutering, vaccinating and microchipping, and necessary treatment such as dental work, blood tests, and surgical procedures. We are not government funded and rely heavily on our own fundraising and the generosity of our loyal supporters. We never have a healthy cat put to sleep, preferring to give all cats a chance for a fresh start in a loving home that suits their needs. Our vet bills are our largest expense, recently taking in a cat called Betsy that had been involved in an RTA, resulting in a broken pelvis which required specialist veterinary treatment costing us around £3000. This was in addition to our total annual vets bill of £55000 and food bill of £14000.Please donate to support our cause.
