The West Oxfordshire Vetka Association based in West Oxfordshire but with members nationwide supports schools, hospitals and sustainable developments in Vetka District in Belarus. This area is the place in the world worst affected by the nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl disaster. It will be two generations before radiation levels in parts of Vetka District reach acceptable levels and 244,000 years before they return to pre-Chernobyl levels.   This small local charity working in the radiation fallout zone of Vetka, Belarus (White Russia) was formed in 2001 by a small group of people concerned for the welfare and future of a people whose lives had been devastated by the Nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986. The area remains, to this day, one which is struggling with the aftermath. Large areas still remain closed to the population because of the very high radiation levels.   The charity’s current project is to rebuild and refurbish a building used by children with a range of Physical and Mental Disabilities including, Hydrocephalus, Cerebral Palsy, Sight and Hearing problems, and a wide range of learning difficulties.    Photos in the gallery show: 1. Settle Area Swimming Pool is a charity registered swimming pool built with funds raised by the local community for the local community and visitors to the area. Please donate to support our cause.Due to our location in the Yorkshire Dales with its watery scenery, Settle Area Swimming Pool was first built to provide the children of Settle and surrounding areas with a safe place to learn to swim (a life skill) and a pool for the local community to enjoy. It Is, still to this day, managed by a committee of volunteers who oversee its running. The pool not only teaches a life skill but contributes to the well being of our customers. Settle Area Swimming Pool provides a vital resource and is a huge asset for the local community. It provides a service for all sections of the community - the young, the elderley, those with visual/learning disabilities. As a charity registered pool we rely heavily on grants and donations. With high running costs, donations allow us to continue to provide a warm, friendly, easily accessible pool kept and maintained to the highest standards.
