Connect - the communication disability network (UK, 1081740) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Connect is a national charity for people living with aphasia (communication disability) which is often caused by stroke. Aphasia can strike anyone at any age and at any time. 1 in every 200 people in the UK lives with aphasia and each person experiences it differently. Some people cannot speak at all, some people have just a few words. It affects reading, writing and numbers. Aphasia can lead to lack of confidence, depression, social exclusion – and people can lose their connection with the world. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Our vision is a simple one, we want a world where people with aphasia can re-connect with life again. Find out more about how we do that at www.ukconnect.org

The Foundation is in place to give disadvantaged young people in Cornwall a platform to discover their true potential. The Foundation is also a promise to these young people that it will do everything in its power to help each one create the productive, successful life they’d like to achieve. Its principles and thinking mirror the Jamie Oliver Foundation set up by Jamie Oliver and whilst Jamie remains the figurehead for the group, a dedicated team in Cornwall runs the Cornwall Food Foundation. They do an outstanding job. Since May 06, the CFoP has enrolled over 143 apprentices. Seventy per cent are still cheffing today. CCECH UK (UK, 1120197) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

CCECH UK supports the Centre for Creativity in Education and Cultural Heritage, CCECH, in Israel which works with Jewish and Arab children in Israel through their schools, families and communities to promote understanding and coexistence. "CCECH uses the folklore and traditions of Jewish and Arab families to bind together the two groups, the Jewish and Arab children, who are sometimes fearful and often ignorant of the “other”. The children’s parents and grandparents are their offspring’s homework - traditional food, games and toys passed down generations, family stories and traditional songs. First, children ask their families about these things. Then they report back to their teachers and classmates; a lesson a week is earmarked for this. Next, a pair of classes, one from a Jewish and one from an Arab school, come together with their parents and teachers to share food, games and information. Over the course of the two to three years that the children and their families spend in the programme, barriers come down and trust grows. A ten year old Palestinian girl who lives in a Refugee Camp gave this feedback: I have never met Jews before. I thought that they only want to humiliate us. I have enjoyed playing with these girls and I have some new friends. I cannot believe how this is possible. I will tell my parents. A Jewish Israeli child said: At the beginning I was really really scared after everything I see in the news and what my parents say. I was scared that they would be violent and when they came I thought ‘what will they do to us – how will we mix, will we argue all the time?’ And, in the end, that’s not what happened - they were nice, like everybody."

After the recently completed circumnavigation of Britain, the end goal of this first stage of the project may have been the sailing trip, but the trip itself is the prize. The real focus of the project is the life-skills that must be acquired to get to this point. It is these life-skills that are so important in broadening the opportunities of these young people as they move forward in life.

YTD Raised: £0.00

Although we are based in a spectacular building, we work at grass roots levels in the heart of local communities with all ages and abilities, using music to increase aspiration and confidence in young people and adults throughout the North East. Many people in the North East live in communities in the top 10% of the most deprived in the UK with few opportunities to access a brighter future. Some of the groups we regularly work with to provide these vulnerable and marginalised communities with support include: Young people Not in Employment, Education or Training; refugees and asylum seekers, Older people, gifted and talented young musicians, non-professional musicians, special needs adults and young people. The transformation experienced by participants can be substantial. Example: Michael had struggled with mental health issues, been criminalised and made homeless. He has now recovered - in part due to the support he received through DJ work with us. One of our music leaders provided him with one-to-one tuition, and supported him in group learning situations. His confidence has grown significantly and the psychiatrists working with him report that his mental health has improved significantly. helps us provide resources for workshops in the community pays for a Teaching Resource Pack pays for a class of children to tour  Sage Gateshead
