The Daphne Jackson Trust (UK, 1125867) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The Daphne Jackson Trust is a charity that has been helping women and men return to their research careers in science, technology, engineering and maths since 1992. The Trust was founded following the death of Professor Daphne Jackson, the UK’s first female physics professor who had a vision to remove the barriers that individuals face when trying to return to careers following a break for family caring or health reasons. Work life balance is a key issue in our society and many people wish to take a break for family or health reasons. In the fast moving world of scientific research, highly qualified and skilled individuals who take a career break quickly find themselves lagging behind their peers, and when returning to work, they struggle to find research-based employment which fully utilises their knowledge and experience. Our Fellowships give returners the opportunity to balance a challenging research project, with a personally tailored retraining programme that gives them the confidence and skills they need to return to their career. Our Fellows’ will contribute to research that will in future bring benefits to our society as a whole. For example, contributing to better ways to diagnose and treat disease, and developing our understanding of the mechanisms of climate change. To date, the Daphne Jackson Trust has helped over 250 individuals return to their careers and with your support we will be able to help hundreds more. The Trust is a unique organisation that brings potential returners together with sponsoring organisations and universities. Our Fellowship Advisors offer unparalleled mentoring and support throughout the fellowship, whilst Universities, learned societies and other organisations provide financial support. Donations are vital to our work in reaching out to the untapped pool of returners and helping individuals overcome the barriers they face when trying to return to their careers.

Business Launchpad (UK, 299599) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Business Launchpad offers practical, complete and personalised business guidance and support to young entrepreneurs, aged 16 to 30 in London, who want to set up and run their own business. All of our services are free. Since our launch in 1988, Business Launchpad has provided support to 5,000 young people. Our unique, holistic support model has also led to impressive survival rates for our young peoples’ businesses, with 85% still trading after two years. The high rate of unemployment, following the recession in the early 1980s, was the key driving force for Business Launchpad’s establishment. Richard Williams, a local resident and Business Launchpad’s Founder, approached Wandsworth Council with a business plan to get disadvantaged, unemployed, young people in the borough not only into employment but to help them set up and run their own businesses. Originally founded as the Wandsworth Youth Enterprise Centre (WYEC), our work gradually grew and expanded beyond Wandsworth and we opened our second Enterprise Centre in Acton in November 2012. Due to expansion across London we re-launched with the new name of Business Launchpad, to better reflect the scope of our work and to move away from an image that was specific to one area of London. The demand for our services remains as high now as it was 25 years ago. During 2012 the number of young people Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) had risen to beyond one million, almost one in five. According to the thinktank Demos, this number will grow to 1.2m over the next five years. Today, Business Launchpad‘s mission remains the same: to offer practical, complete and personalised business guidance and support to any young entrepreneur, regardless of their background, who wants to set up and run their own enterprise. LAST ORDERS MIDNIGHT THURSDAY 21ST JUNE ........HAPPY SOLSTICE!   The Rosita Trust was launched in May 2011 to commemorate Polly Renton and her daughter Rosita Fenwick Wilson. The charity is focused on media development and ethical journalism in Kenya. In 2001 Polly arrived in Kenya as a young television director, making documentaries for Channel 4. She was frustrated by what she saw on Kenyan television - soap operas, re-runs ofold sitcoms, chat shows and low quality local news programmes. She felt that Kenyans deserved better and established MEDEVA (Media Development in Africa) www.medevatv.com A decade after she arrived in Kenya, MEDEVA continues to flourish. It makes several highly popular TV programmes for nationwide broadcast and it has trained over two hundred young people from East Africa in TV and Radio programme making. Many have won major awards. The Rosita Trust helps identify and offer young Africans an opportunity to have a voice, often in adversity, through filmmaking and radio. It also gives one-off grants to other worthwhile causes in Kenya. This is what Polly believed in, and would have continued to do. The Trust is administered under the trusteeship of Polly's family and friends. Its patrons are the film-maker Lord Puttnam, and the veteran broadcasters, David Dimbleby and Sir David Frost.

We are New Highway and we provide free, confidential services for anyone concerned about their own, or someone else’s drug use or drinking.  We believe that people can and should be able to overcome the negative consequences of problem drug and alcohol use. We enable this through providing high quality and effective advice, support and treatment. Please support us. Problem drug and alcohol use can rob any one of us of our opportunity to live a happy and fulfilling life.  In England alone there are estimated to be a third or a million problem drug users and 1.6 million people with some level of alcohol dependency. Problem drug and alcohol use has many negative consequences for the people directly concerned, their families, friends and colleagues, the communities they live in and society as a whole. In financial terms alone the costs are estimated to amount to £15.3 billion a year to the English economy for drugs and £25.1 billion to the UK economy for alcohol. We help hundreds of people to move away from chaotic states towards stability. We provide the treatment, counselling and guidance that those individuals need in order for them to tackle the root causes. This in turn has a positive impact on the communities around them. We can do more of this with your help.
