AV Foundation (UK, 1069099) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The AV Foundation is an educational charity supporting rural schools in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It was established by the volunteering organisation Africa & Asia Venture ("AV") to help enhance the quality of school education in the communities served by AV volunteers. Our fundraising efforts are focused around one project per year in each country where AV operates. Projects involve providing new or refurbished school classrooms, libraries, washrooms and kitchens; supplying books, teaching materials and sports equipment; financing teachers' costs and training expenses, as well as selectively financing pupil subsidy schemes or bursaries. AV's strength at grassroots level, with its network of in-country representatives, enables us to establish genuine community needs, closely monitor the implementation of projects and ensure that funds are properly spent. Wherever possible we work with former AV volunteers who have dedicated time and energy to helping the schools and communities where they spent time as volunteers. African Swahili Community Project in the UK (ASCOP) formerly African Swahiliphone Refugee project in the UK (ASREP) is a voluntary organisation set up in October 1992 as a self - help group to highlight the needs of African Swahili speaking asylum seekers, refugees and migrants from the Great Lakes Region of Africa including Burundi, DRCongo, Rwanda, part of Uganda and Western Tanzania, who are resident or who are intending to reside in the United Kingdom and work towards their integration into the British Society. It became a charity community organisation in September 1996 and registered under the number 1064874/0 of the Charity Commission. Our aim is to relieve poverty, sickness and distress amongst immigrants of African descent by providing such persons with free and confidential advice, advocacy, assistance, representation, counselling, translating and interpreting services in matters such as education, employment, health, housing, immigration, money, social security, training, welfare and workfare. Our activities consist in the provision of services on the issues mentioned above. Most of these activities take place at our drop-in office but we also undertake outreach visits to homes, hostels, hospitals, immigration detention centres, etc. Our volunteers provide support to newly arrived asylum seekershelping them to accompany to GPs, social services and the immigration services to provide advocacy and interpretation. We also organise workshops, seminars and mother tongue and supplementary classes. We provide support and counselling to young people who have experienced trauma, atrocities...and now work with partners in the Great Lakes Region as we can deliver activities outside the United Kingdom.
