We are a small charity that seeks to preserve and protect a unique lozenge shaped Roman fort with multiple ramparts near Alston and to research it and the historic landscape around it. We make the area and research available to the public relying solely on donations, grants and fundraising to do so. The fort is the highest in England and has been described as 'possibly the best preserved Roman fort in England'. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and with grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund we have commissioned and adopted a professional Research Framework. We seek to follow this to develop knowledge about the fort's history and uses. We also have evidence of pre-historic, medieval and modern use of the landscape around the fort which we intend to research and share with the public. We can only do the research and development of this important site and keep it open for the public to discover and enjoy with help from grant providers and donations from the wider public. We offer a range of direct support services to women experiencing domestic abuse in the Greater Manchester area and beyond. Each year three million women in Britain experience rape, domestic violence, stalking or other violence. Your help would greatly enable us to achieve our Vision, that all women and their dependents are made aware of their rights and offered choices so that they can live without the fear of domestic abuse. Thank you so much to the 32 runners who took to the streets of Manchester on 20th May for the 10km Manchester Run 2012!! It was a great day and everyone's efforts to both fundraise for and promote the helpline are much appreciated! The Helpline recieves over 5,500 incoming contacts each year and with recent funding cuts we need your support more than ever!! Organise your own event!- If you have an event and would like to donate to the Helpline then please let us know and we will support you where we can- Thank you! Other information The focus of the work of the organisation includes the services of the Women’s Domestic Abuse Helpline which receives over 5,500 calls each year. One seventh of the calls are from the South Asian community and we meet this need  through our Community Language Helpline Service in Urdu and Punjabi. We couldnt do all this work without the support of dedicated volunteers. A key part of our work is to ensure there is a high level of awareness in society of domestic abuse and its effects to well being. We believe that we can all have a role to support or help others who maybe suffering. Domestic abuse is not just physical violence but can also be emotional, sexual, economic and psychological. We work to ensure that women and children do not suffer in silence and that there is a choice of support and advice services in Greater Manchester from prevention to crisis.
