All funds raised (approx £170,000) have been donated to a research project at St. GGeorge's Tooting.

(UK, XT26453) Young Horizons is a charity which provides young people from areas of deprivation with a weekend sailing experience as part of structured development programme. This development programme provides a diverse and powerful combination of knowledge and skills which are designed to break the cycle of deprivation and low motivation that typically lead to poor life opportunities. Places on the sailing expeditions have to be earned by successfully completing the qualifying stages of the development programme. While the expeditions are intended to be enjoyable, they are certainly not a leisure cruise. The young crew has to learn to collaborate to make the boat “work”; e.g. where to go, how to get there and who does what. This challenging environment reinforces self-confidence and trust in others as well as providing an experience and range of skills completely outside of their normal “comfort zone”. In 2011 Young Horizons aims to provide 8 sailing expeditions with up to 9 young people on each. Despite the fact that our crews are made up of highly qualified volunteers, each expedition still costs approximately £2,000. Our short term goal, therefore, is to raise £16,000, to fund the 2011 season. In the medium term, our goals are to increase the number of sailing trips per seaon and the number of youth charities and youth programs we support. One of our long term goals is to own and run our own boat, to steamline our expenses and maximise operational efficiency, as we increase the number of sailing expeditions we provide. We will, of course, greatly appreciate any support that you could give us for this very worthwhile cause.

Our charity works with women, men, children and young people who have experienced, or are at risk of domestic violence. We are unique as we address this issue through the creative and performing arts. The arts help to empower our members, raise self esteem, confidence and self worth. The art exhibitions and performances contribute towards raising public awareness of the effects of domestic violence on an individual, the children, young people and our society. At Butterfly, we believe that every person is a unique and creative individual, given a safe space and the belief in themselves that they are beautiful, deserving and can achieve their dreams. When a new member comes to Butterfly we are able to offer the understanding, compassion and empathy required. When a member has accessed Butterfly for six months, the transformation that takes place is a privilege to witness. The member is now confident, with high self worth and self esteem and is in a position to pass on their learning to their children and other members of their family and friends. It is important for both genders to work together on this issue, through working together we send out a stronger message that men and women are united in opposing domestic violence. A recent report estimated that nearly 1,000,000 children and young people in the UK are affected by domestic violence. In response to members, local and national need, we have devised the Caterpillar Club, Children’s Art Therapy for children aged 4 to12 years. In partnership with another local charity, Vita Nova, we deliver programmes into primary schools educating on Safer Relationships and how drug and alcohol addiction and domestic violence self perpetuates. In partnership with Bournemouth Youth Service, we have created Healthy Relationships DV Programme for young people aged13-19 years.

Replacing the nets will cost £38,000. Horsley & Send CC was founded in 1997 as a result of the merger of Horsley CC and Send CC and now play at the former home of Horsley CC, Twinn’s Field, West Horsley.The Club runs 4 senior sides on a Saturday, and a Sunday XI playing friendly cricket, made up of both adults and senior colts. The Club supports an active Junior section running training and teams from for U5 to U19. Facilities at the Club are expensive to improve and maintain.
