The Band Aid Trust was registered as a British Charity in January 1985 for the relief of hunger and poverty in Ethiopia and the neighbourhood thereof. By July 1985, over $6 million had been spent on buying and transporting food, shelter, medical supplies, water equipment and other essential items to famine victims Ethiopia and Sudan. The Live Aid concerts on 13th July 1985 raised over $80 million world-wide, which was spent on programmes designed to address some of the underlying causes of the famine. In total, Band Aid has raised in excess of $195 million. In recent years the Charity has supported projects designed to make a lasting difference to the lives of people in and around Ethiopia. This includes the construction of schools, hospitals, boreholes, wells, rain-water harvesting facilities and latrines, as well as food security, hygiene, sanitation, livelihood diversification and income generating activities, training in-country for teachers, doctors and nurses, assistance for those living with HIV/AIDS, and emergency interventions such as nutrition screening programmes, seed and animal distribution and the procurement of emergency food aid to treat severely malnourished children and adults.

Swawou School Foundation (UK, 1148588) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Who we are The Swawou School Foundation was set up to help deliver free primary education to disadvantaged girls at the Swawou Layout Community Primary School for Girls in Kenema, Sierra Leone. The school provides a nurturing and safe place to learn, where the girls have the support and encouragement they need to stay in education.  Background to the problem Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world. Still recovering from a decade of civil war, accessing basic services such as health care and education is beyond the ability of many. Access to education is a fundamental human right, yet in Sierra Leone almost a quarter of primary school aged children do not attend school. In a country where 70% live on under US$1.25 a day, poverty remains the number one barrier to gaining an education. For those children that do attend school, learning conditions remain challenging. Cramped, overcrowded classrooms, poorly trained teachers, corporal punishment and lack of adequate learning materials all hinder the quality of education received. Girls face additional challenges, including sexual harassment. Uneducated girls are more at risk than boys of becoming marginalised.  They are more likely to be forced into early marriage and motherhood and less likely to have a voice in the social and political realities which influence the quality of their daily lives.  Uneducated girls are unable to support themselves financially, and their health and well being are also at risk:  research has shown that uneducated girls are twice as likely to contract HIV/AIDS, and are more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Educating girls is essential to the productivity, health and development of Sierra Leone. It not only empowers a generation of girls and women, but also helps to break cycles of poverty and results in raised income, healthier and smaller families, and communities that are more proactive in their development. Our solution Swawou School Foundation works to overcome the barriers that prevent girls from gaining a quality primary education in Sierra Leone. We offer a free education to out of school and disadvantaged girls in a safe and happy learning environment, where they have the opportunity to explore and thrive. We currently have 40 girls enrolled at the school with plans to extend to 120 girls over the next few years. Our capacity has been greatly increased thanks to the construction of a new and spacious school at Swawou (due to be completed by May 2014). Our school embraces the ‘child friendly’ school model in which the needs of the children are at the heart of how we operate. We believe that simple solutions can make a big difference, and so have adopted many simple strategies that ensure our students have the best experience possible and are set up for a successful future.  These features include: The impact of our work Education has a profound impact on the lives of girls, their families and community. Our positive and rights respecting school environment has ensured that our pupils feel safe and cared for. They have the opportunity to learn and develop new skills and confidence. Over 80% of our pupils currently pass formal school examinations at good or above. Given that our pupils come from very poor and illiterate families, we feel that this is an excellent achievement but are constantly looking to improve our performance through teacher training and rigorous monitoring. Working closely with parents and the community to raise awareness and support for girl child education, we have also witnessed changing attitudes amongst community members, with parents and community members now much more supportive of educating girls as well as boys. We hope to grow the school even further and continue offering these essential services to our pupils, so please do donate today to help us ensure a brighter future for the girls and women of Sierra Leone.
