All of our children have a wide range of Special Educational Needs with just under half of our children under Great Ormond Street Hospital. Our children’s disabilities and learning difficulties include Autism, Downs Syndrome, Dyslexia and Global Development Delay. Although none of our children attends due to physical disability, many our children have a physical disability alongside their Special Educational Needs. Nearly 50% of our children come from financially disadvantage backgrounds, some in care, fostered and many have parents with Special Needs themselves. St Luke’s is one of the lowest funded Special Educational Needs School in Hertfordshire, with 92% of our Local Authority funding is used for the necessary high ration of staff, leaving 8% to cover everything from toilet roll to books. Therefore, even necessities at the school are a fundraising issue. We are trying all possible avenues to raise these funds, as well as raising awareness of our school and Special Educational Needs.

SCAS employ Care Attendants to go into carers homes to look after their loved one/dependant so that they can have a well deserved break from their caring role. The carers can use this time as they wish: catch up on sleep, have a rest, get their shopping, meet friends or attend appointments. Carers’ health and wellbeing is improved greatly from having a regular break to look forward to and enjoy with peace of mind that their loved one/dependant is being kept safe and well looked after. The ‘cared for’ people also benefit from this as it greatly improves their health and wellbeing by seeing someone different, having more social interaction and if they are able, our Care Attendants often take them out into the community for a drive in the car, or to café’s. Anyone can refer a carer to us or carers can contact us themselves for support. Our fundraised monies and donations are used to pay towards the services we provide. We cover all areas of Shetland.

We are currently running group meetings and one-to-one sessions and peer mentoring which will all help in personal development. Our Charity addresses the issue of substance misuse, with a particular focus on the Panjabi Sikh community. The unspoken alcohol problem within the British Panjabi Sikh Community has been depicted in a BBC documentary. Although social drinking is somewhat encouraged at weddings and other functions, people tend to to keep quiet when it comes to speaking about alcoholism due to the stigma, and the fear of being ostracised, creating a taboo around the issue. The fear of being judged may result in someone refraining from seeking help. There is a really strong pride and honour for the family name and people don't want anyone to perceive them as having something wrong with them or having any form of weakness.
