(UK, 1093147) Browse eventsMADaboutART aims to do things differently; to MAKE A DIFFERENCE (MAD); to be creative and solve problems by giving young people skills to make changes to self and others. We are based in Knysna in the Western Cape of South Africa and our programme serves children and youth in low income areas of high unemployment and high HIV prevalence. Consequently children and youth are affected by issues of poverty, poor nutrition, ill health, low educational attainment, lack of self-esteem and under-achievement. Many face tough social problems as a result of marginalisation. At our children’s community centre in Nekkies on the outskirts of Knysna we aim to provide a safe ‘home from home’ where children feel loved and nurtured and are inspired to fulfil their potential and reach for their dreams. Children and youth work together to fight HIV – learning how to protect themselves and challenging stigmatisation of people living with HIV. Our programme of ‘experiential’ expressional art and narrative therapy encourages involvement and fun, creating a ‘children teaching children’ approach. Young adults are recruited and trained to become ‘Youth Ambassadors’ who provide strong, positive role models to inspire children and youth to make healthy choices and make a difference in their communities.
