Street Pastors Leicester City Centre (UK, 1131179) Browse events

YTD Raised: n/a

We are a Christian project made up of people from different churches around Leicester. We volunteer on the streets to reach out to all people showing compassion, care, and helping to create a positive atmosphere in our city at nighttime. We are there to listen and help rather than to ‘preach’ and we will only talk about our faith if someone directly asks us about it. Some of the things we do includes throwing glass bottles in bins so they do not get used as weapons, chatting with people who are out for a fun night, staying with a vulnerable adult until their friends or member of their family arrives, giving directions, giving details of support agencies in Leicester, handing out blankets to those most in need of them, giving flip flops to ladies who are walking barefoot so they do not cut their feet, being extra pairs of hands, ears or eyes in the event of an incident

YTD Raised: £0.00

Home-Start Merton has been supporting local families since 1993 and offers free support, friendship and practical help to families with at least one child under five. Families are visited regularly in their own homes by volunteers who have all had experience of parenting, and know how hard it can sometimes be. Recent news A Letter from our Director. Feb2013 Christmas seems so long ago now and a distant memory for most, but Christmas 2012 is one that Home-Start Merton won’t forget in a hurry.  On 12th December, devastation struck in the form of a break in to our premises discovered on the morning of our Christmas Party.  Word soon spread of our dilemma and the response was quite simply astounding.   I wanted to take this opportunity  to say a huge thank you to each and everyone of you who generously gave presents to replace the 71 that were stolen and  many more of you who gave cash donations.  Toys were arriving on the doorstep from colleagues and complete strangers who selflessly responded to our plight.  As a result of this all of our families got their Christmas presents and more. Home-Start Merton makes up part of the UK’s leading family support charity. Working with young families in times of distress and preventing families from reaching crisis point. Our trained parent volunteers support local families with issues ranging from post- natal depression and mental health, through to poverty, isolation, disability and illness. The unexpected but hugely welcome financial donations will prove invaluable at a time when our funding is uncertain.  Every penny will be applied with the greatest care and consideration to support the continuation of our service in this our 20th anniversary year.  This heart-warming response truly touched everyone of us associated with the charity – our trustees, our staff and volunteers and of course the families we support who benefitted from this out-pouring of generosity.  Thank you again. We need more volunteers to support families waiting, and we are recruiting  now for our next Volunteer Preparation Course due to start in April. If you have parenting experience and can spare between 2-4 hours per week you could help make a difference for a family needing support.  To find out more about our work please visit www.homestartmerton.co.uk   BARBARA CLUER DIRECTOR HOME-START MERTON   A big, big thank you. Christmas 2012 We have been very busy collecting presents and food for our families for christmas.  Many of our families struggle this time of year fincially to provide presents.  Our Charity with the help of local schools is able to give presents to all the members of our families we currently support.   We are also looking forward to our Christmas party for families on Wednesday 12th December.  All our families are invited and Father Christmas also makes an appearance to hand out the gifts we have organised. Update Unfortunately on Tuesday night someone broke into the charity and stole all the gifts and food for the families and the party food for the next day.  We were very upset about this but despite the setback were able to feed the children pizzas (which they loved!). Father Christmas did make an appearance with chocolate for all the children. Naturally we have had to work extra hard to make sure our families get the Christmas gifts they need so desperately. We could not have done it without you. We have been delighted with the support and kindness you have shown us and should be able to  replace the presents that were stolen.  A big, big thank you to all those who have donated through this website. With your support Christmas is now back on track for our local Merton families. _______________________________________________________________________ On 2nd June 2012 Home-Start Merton took part in the Mitcham Carnival. Please see the pictures in our gallery.  We had a stall selling baby clothes and goods, as well as a free craft table where families could make crowns for the Jublilee.   Later in the day, over £600 was raised through sponsorship when a group of local mascots held a race.  Pudsey Bear won! Special thanks go to the community volunteers of AFC Wimbledon for organising this. You can follow AFC Wimbledon on twitter @AFCWimbledon.
