LADY MAYORESS CHARITY CYCLE RIDE 2014 CALAIS to PARIS The Lady Mayoress' Charity has for many years raised money for a variety of causes around the Canterbury district. Each year the incoming Lady Mayoress, with the help of the trustees, pick the charitable causes to be supported for her twelve months in office. This year Linda Taylor the current Lady Mayoress, has chosen her two very worthwile causes: The Pilgrims Hospice a charity that provides care and support free of charge to people with life limiting illnesses, their families and carers for over three decades. And SNAAP an organisation that provides safe and exciting activities for disabled children allowing them to develop key skills, friendships and build confidence whilst having fun. Over the weekend of 9 - 11 May 2014 40 cyclists from the Canterbury area of all abilities will be cycling from Calais to Paris roughly 186 miles over three days. The Lady Mayoress and the Lord Mayor will be accompanying the group on the trip giving them support and providing them with food and drink along the way. Each rider will raise a minimum £150 each for the charity so please support them as much as you can for these worthwhile causes.

FESTIVAL SPIRIT MAKING DREAMS REALITY Festival Spirit makes the dream of going to a music festival reality; providing the full festival experience to young people who would not normally be able to enjoy one due to life-limiting illness or disability, our VIP's. We are passionate about helping people who never thought they could attend a festival to enjoy the experience safe in the knowledge that they will have the facilities, support and back up necessary for their condition. Carers are hand-picked to match the needs of our attendees (our VIP's) needs from straightforward feeding and showering to more complex routines. Our accommodation on site is in an amazing specially adapted tent with hard flooring and close to disabled facilities such as showers and toilets. Able-bodied "buddies" are matched up to VIP's to help them get around the festival site and to get the most out of the event, to see the bands they want to see and to attend all the other exciting activities on offer.

Educare Fund supports poor families in Lesotho (southern Africa) to keep bright girls in school to the end of secondary education. There is some government funding for primary and higher education, but it is not currently available to all. Often families are faced with the dilemma of choosing which children to put though secondary education. When families have to make a choice because they cannot afford to educate all their children, it is often the girls who end up leaving school. This means that they have little chance of attaining higher education and fully realising their potential. The education of the young women of Lesotho is especially important in the current climate of high local incidence of HIV AIDS because women bear most of the burden of care within families. Additionally, women are also the mainstay of child-rearing, laying the foundation for future generations. It is therefore, very important to ensure that they are well equipped for these roles. Educare Fund pays a proportion of the annual school fees for each girl. This way we work in partneship with the families, so that they retain a stake in the education of their children. The proportion of the fees provided by Educare Fund depends on the funds available, therefore the more money we raise, the more we can pass on to the sponsored girls. As a small charity, Educare Fund has relatively low outgoings so that practically all of the money raised is used to support the girls.Virtually all of the work of administering the charity is done by volunteers who believe passionately in the work of Educare Fund.
