LAST ORDERS MIDNIGHT THURSDAY 21ST JUNE ........HAPPY SOLSTICE! The Rosita Trust was launched in May 2011 to commemorate Polly Renton and her daughter Rosita Fenwick Wilson. The charity is focused on media development and ethical journalism in Kenya. In 2001 Polly arrived in Kenya as a young television director, making documentaries for Channel 4. She was frustrated by what she saw on Kenyan television - soap operas, re-runs ofold sitcoms, chat shows and low quality local news programmes. She felt that Kenyans deserved better and established MEDEVA (Media Development in Africa) www.medevatv.com A decade after she arrived in Kenya, MEDEVA continues to flourish. It makes several highly popular TV programmes for nationwide broadcast and it has trained over two hundred young people from East Africa in TV and Radio programme making. Many have won major awards. The Rosita Trust helps identify and offer young Africans an opportunity to have a voice, often in adversity, through filmmaking and radio. It also gives one-off grants to other worthwhile causes in Kenya. This is what Polly believed in, and would have continued to do. The Trust is administered under the trusteeship of Polly's family and friends. Its patrons are the film-maker Lord Puttnam, and the veteran broadcasters, David Dimbleby and Sir David Frost.

(UK, 1058939) Browse eventsThe Dawn Trust Charity was set up with the aid of the Lottery Heritage fund and many generous donations to rebuild the historic Thames “stackie” Sailing Barge Dawn to a sea going condition, maintain and exhibit her for the benefit of the nation and make her available for educational sailing trips and instruction in seamanship for the purpose of instruction of young persons in the principles of discipline, loyalty and good citizenship. SB Dawn is registered as a Dunkirk Little Ship and was damaged in Dover Harbour while taking part in Operation Dynamo. Dawn is also on the National Historic Ships Register. The hard work of rebuilding her to an operational condition is now completed and following a successful first season based at West Mersea in Essex, funding is now required for the ongoing programme of essential maintenance, accommodation improvements, heating, facilities upgrades, restoration and improvement of the original 100 year old refitted equipment. Hopefully with the help of our volunteers and donators, much of this work will be ready for next years sailing season. The aim for next year is to be fully funded and ready for a programme of events such as all the famous Thames Barge Matches where young persons can train in teams for a race crew in a unique type of vessel. Other events planned are involved with Mersea Cadet Week, Mersea and other Regattas around the East Coast, various sailing trips visiting the creeks and old barge quays such as in Bradwell where the Dawn Trust is planning to rebuild the barge quay, again with donation and Lottery funding. We even have plans as a one off to use Essex Wildlife Trust's Abbotts Hall Farm jetty for loading horse feed and hay stacked on deck to deliver for the local supplier to the Household Cavalry in London, a job the Dawn was originally built for in 1897. Let’s just hope we don’t also have to bring back the manure!
