(UK, 1098215) Browse eventsThe Changarawe Project was started by Caro Walford in 1998 after a visit to her daughter Eleanor in Tanzania in 1997. Whilst there, Caro met an inspirational local lady called Felistas Kalomo, who’s vision was to open a pre-primary school in Changarawe Village to support local mothers and serve the community. Through a lot of hard work from both Caro and Felistas, The Zawadi School opened with 22 children and 1 teacher in 1999.Today, the school has grown to 120 children, many of whom are orphaned through HIV, and the staff of teachers, welfare support, cooks and administrators is 16. The Project as grown over the past 15 years and in addition to the Pre-Primary School, the charity gives support to around 50 grandparents who care for their orphaned grandchildren, 150 orphans throughout their Primary and Secondary education, HIV Education in schools through our Peer Educators, Micro Finance to a rolling 150 people per annum and as well as the now expanded Zawadi School has also built a large Study Centre. Needless to say, the charity is entirely not-for-profit and the trustees are all dedicated volunteers so we can guarantee that 100% of funds are ploughed back into the project. The charity is at a critical point in its remarkable history and it needs your fundraising to pay for the initiatives of 2014. Our main aim this year is to improve the ability of the children to read, write and speak English. Until they start the 4 year O level course children are taught in kiSwahili. However, all public exams are taught in English, the papers are in English and the teachers who try and teach them have a very poor ability in English themselves. Only 6% of the entire country's O level students passed their exams in 2013. We plan to change this by setting up an English teaching programme as soon as possible.

We fundraise with a variety of events including summer fetes, Christmas fairs, auctions of promises, discos and sponsored events. We have recently raised funds to install outdoor playground facilities, set up and support an organic school garden, provide hall sound and projection equipment and subsidised some school trips. Our challenge for the year ahead is to fundraise towards furniture and equipment for the school extension and remodelling project which was completed in 2013. The Spinathon Over the weekend of the 8th and 9th March a group of parents are undertaking a 24 hour sponsored ‘Spinathon’ challenge at the Barn gym in Cholsey. The gym is kindly donating the use of its spin bikes and an instructor throughout the session. Money raised here will be specifically going towards some new, much needed, wooden storage facilities for sports and outdoor equipment in the school playground. We would be extremely grateful for your sponsorship of this event. The Musicathon As your children may well have already told you, we will be holding a Music Marathon on the last two days of term to raise funds for curricular and extra-curricular music activities within the school. There is little in the way of funding for musical instruments and, as you can imagine, these cost a lot of money. As a school we are very proud of our musical tradition and the talents we nurture. We feel passionately about making this a provision for all children in the school not just those who choose to learn to play an instrument or sing in the choir. Every child in the school will be involved in making this event a success and we hope that you will support us by sponsoring your child. The event will be a whole 24-hour of continuous music making, including a sleepover for musicians in the band and choir. The event will be launched in school at 1.30pm on the Thursday and will finish with assembly at 1pm on the Friday to which you are warmly invited to attend.

We are situated in an idyllic location near Dartington and Totnes in Devon, surrounded by rolling hills, fields abundant with biodynamic vegetables, and on the doorstep of the majestic Dartmoor National Park and South Hams coastal areas. THE FIRST TIME I ENTERED THE SCHOOL I HAD A STRONG FEELING OF COMING HOME. At first glance, our school is not unusual. However, if you look deeper, you will probably notice a unique energy, commitment, and passion that runs throughout the core of the school and its community. This sentiment from a parent at the school is not unusual, and we've had many parents, children and visitors come through our gates who feel a sense of belonging, a sense that this place is different. We have been around since 1982 when three enthusiastic teachers and a committed bunch of parents - with nothing but a dream and resolve - got together and started a school. From humble beginnings - one class of a handful of pupils - the school now has some 300 from early years through to currently class 10 (and soon to be class 11 and 12).
