Kenyan School Fund exists to create the opportunity of education for children in Kenya for whom this would otherwise be unavailable. We wish to do this by continuing to support the existing school we founded in 2008 and then by establishing an additional school in 2015. We plan to achieve this by regular fundraising efforts and building long-lasting relationships with supportive partners in business and the community. Please help local children make healthy choices Life Education Wessex provides age-appropriate health and drug prevention education to children aged 3 - 13 years in Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Hampshire. Our aim is to ensure that children have the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to make healthy choices and to avoid risky behaviours. All our programmes are delivered by specially trained Educators. The programmes for Primary School children are delivered in a purpose-built mobile classroom, or 'Life Bus', and include role play, music, drama and specially made film to get our healthy messages across. All of the programmes feature Harold the giraffe - our puppet mascot - who is loved by all the children. Programme modules for older pupils - on drugs, alcohol or smoking - are delivered in the school classroom. For every school we visit we need to raise £335 each day. With your help we can ensure that the young children of Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Hampshire stay healthy and happy. If you would like to take part in Harold's 1,000 Challenges (it's free!) and help us raise much needed funds by undertaking a sponsored activity or challenge of your choice, please click on the 'Start Fundraising' link above. ETC stands for Educating The Children, which is exactly what we are doing in the Masai Mara, in Kenya and also in the UK (through our global learning programme). There are essentially two strands to ETC: (1) UK VOLUNTEER TEACHERS: go to teach in the Mara where classroom sizes are roughly 1 teacher to 100 pupils! They also exchange best practises with Kenyan teachers, and educate UK pupils on their return through real life examples of global learning. We provide them with the training to do that. (2) FARIJIKA SECONDARY SCHOOL: we have recently started building the first girls secondary school in the Masai Mara which will also act as a safe haven from female genital mutilation and forced childhood marriages. International research shows that investing in girls delivers a higher return than any other investment made in a community's development.

The core idea of Reading Spots is that we provide a vehicle through which we can fund the creation of libraries within rural communities. There is a complete lack of reading material of any sort in rural areas of Ghana, and the enthusiasm for reading is astonishing. We will often fund small libraries within schools on the condition that the facilities are shared with all local schools and the wider community. If the library is effectively used and the local chiefs or authority agree to fund the salaries of libraries, we will extend the library to a larger facility. Together with our Ghanaians colleagues, we have many plans for the projects including free literacy classes for adults, books clubs and creative writing clubs and competitions for children and adults, with a website being planned to facilitate sharing of writing and ideas about reading with others within Ghana and England. We have so far created one Reading Spot in the Messiah International School in Abofour, which is used by over a hundred members of the local community as late as 9pm at night. We are currently fundraising for a large community library in Akumaden, a project that will be managed by James Dugger, Director of the nearby Dreamland School. The name 'Reading Spot' derives from the Ghanaian love of the name 'spot' as a bar or hang out- they are seen across Ghana. We hope that the Reading Spots are seen as community centres actively promoting community cohesion, literacy and creativity.

The Uganda Humanist Schools Trust helps schools in Uganda working to offer liberal, secular education to needy children. Founded by Ugandan Humanists and run as charities, the schools are inclusive and welcome children from all religious, social and ethnic backgrounds. We aim to bring about positive improvements in students' day-to-day educational experiences and welfare and, in so doing, to enhance their life chances. Our charity provides scholarships (£120 day, £300 boarding) to enable bright but needy children to attend the schools. We support children who are orphans and from very poor homes. UHST arranges, through local suppliers, the provision of books, science materials, computers and software and other educational resources for art, music, sports and co-curricular activities. Although finding large-scale funds is challenging, we have also helped to enhance the general infrastructure of the schools we support. In recent years we have provided and equipped libraries, science and computer labs, refurbish classrooms and sports fields and built two hostels to provide safe homes for girl students. We also help to ensure that the schools have safe drinking water, clean toilets and electricity, using sustainable solar and hydro-power wherever possible.
