(UK, 1118177) Browse eventsOur mission is to ensure that every child has access to the most basic education essentials such as pens, pencils, paper, chalk and rulers. We provide these educational basics in brightly coloured boxes which are themselves used for a variety of purposes. Each box contains enough basic school materials for 25 pupils and costs £295 including shipping. Our core programme is “School Aid for Zambia”. Primary education in Zambia is “free” but the education budget results in chronic underfunding of schools. Poverty and AIDS means parents are often unable to provide the educational basics that UK children take for granted. In addition to our core programme, School Aid 4 Zambia, we have shipped boxes to Zimbabwe and the Philippines and boxes have been flown to Ghana and Nepal. However the provision of Literacy Boxes to Zambian schools remains the main focus of our operations. It would take 800 Literacy boxes a year to keep the 25 or so schools with which are currently involved adequately supplied with basic school materials. Many Schools in the UK are adopting the Literacy in a Box Trust, not only as a charity in its own right, but also as a catalyst to help deliver the curriculum in Global Citizenship and Understanding an Overseas Culture.
