WE ARE A CHARITY WHICH SUPPORTS THE WORK CARRIED OUT AT THE PRISCILLA BACON CENTRE FOR PALLIATIVE CARE IN NORWICH. WE SEEK TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THOSE IN NEED BY SUPPORTING THE NURSES, DOCTORS, THERAPISTS, FAMILIES AND CARERS, AS WELL AS THE PATIENTS WHO USE THE CENTRE. The Priscilla Bacon Centre for palliative care in Norwich is a hospice, serving patients with advanced cancer and other terminal illnesses.  The hospice was officially opened in 1979 by the Duchess of Kent.  The hospice has been funded through a combination of charitable donations and NHS grants ever since. The Priscilla Bacon Lodge Support Group, administered by an outside board of trustees, is ONLY funded by members subscriptions, donations and legacies.  We help patients and their families by providing quickly those ‘extras’ which can improve the quality of life in times of difficulty; things which the NHS often find hard to supply. An elected committee meets monthly to respond to requests from doctors, nurses, and carers for special things like a new bed at home, a much needed holiday for a patient or carer, replacing a broken washing machine or fridge, medical or nursing equipment and specialist chairs or mattresses. We also pay for private ambulances to enable some patients to return home for a few hours. The Group also finances other services including the coffee bar, car mileage for volunteer drivers and the training of bereavement visitors.  In addition, the multidisciplinary staff is financially assisted to attend conferences and training courses, and books and medical publications are provided for study purposes. We are able to access funds at short notice.  We are also able to fund new projects which can be adopted by the NHS at a later date or provide emergency assistance when NHS funds are not immediately available.
