Lanarkshire Association for Mental Health (UK, SCO10404) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,401.00

The Organisation was formed in 1983 to establish a forum that would serve as a focus for the development of services for people who experience mental illness within the communities of Lanarkshire. Until 1989, much of our activity was within the Hamilton/Blantyre area where we provided supported accommodation and developed an early vision of dispersed day care. Since then, there has been steady growth in our services and we currently provide community based support services throughout all of Lanarkshire. Employment opportunities have also been developed to explore pathways to employment for people who wish to pursue work related activity. The Organisation now employs approximately 75 staff, a mixture of full, part-time and bank staff, and also involves volunteers to do specific pieces of work depending on local need. Our funding comes mainly from contract agreements with North and South Lanarkshire Council with the central management/administration costs funded through Management Fees levied on each service. Senior Managers contribute to the organisation through a small management team and we have been developing opportunities for all staff to contribute to the success of the organisation through inter-team working groups and an inclusive communication strategy. We are committed, in the long term, to a gradual and qualitative improvement in the focus and delivery of our services. We are committed to a staff training programme which is geared towards SVQ training to meet the Regulation of Care requirements. The Organisation was again re-accredited with Investors in People Award in December 2009, first achieved April 2001, which endorses our commitment to staff development. The Organisation is governed by a Board and supported by local Advisory Groups and consultation groups with service users/carers taking all places on the latter groups and service users at least 50% of places on the Board. We are committed to the meaningful participation of developing and providing quality support services in partnership with people who experience mental health difficulties, their carers and other agencies.

There’s so much you can do with VSA, whether you want to donate, volunteer, hold an event or contribute in some other way. You could be changing lives for: Children with additional support needs, like Down’s Syndrome.  Maisie’s Children’s Centre is one of a kind.  It pioneers full-time integrated care for mainstream children and additional support needs children.  “The most important thing about it is that the kids don’t even notice a wheelchair or oxygen tank.” Children with complex learning disabilities.  Linn Moor School is a very special place.  Here, children with autism and other complex needs reach goals they didn’t know they had.  Young families.  Richmondhill House is the only service of its kind in Scotland.  It creates bonds between babies and their families, guiding them through the maze of parenthood.  Adults with mental health problems.  We want to create positive effects on health, confidence, independence and responsibility.  Re-Connect helps adults who suffer from mental health problems and social exclusion feel at ease. Adults with learning disabilities.  Adults with learning disabilities are nurtured at Easter Anguston Farm, Peterculter.  Employment here aims to make service users confident in the intimidating mainstream job market. Separated families.  The Family Contact Centre is a happy, relaxed place where children with separated parents can meet the mum or dad they no longer live with.  Think what that means to the child. Older people.  We’ll all grow old one day.  Our care homes have varying levels of support.  It’s all about respecting dependence while promoting independence. Young and adult carers.  One in eight people in Aberdeen have an unpaid caring role.  This includes more than 2,000 children.  Some are as young as five years old.  For both adult and young carers, it’s normal.  It’s life.  They don’t know any different. You can support these people.  And all those we haven’t told you about yet.  Our services will be your services too.  We’d love to you to visit to see where your funds could go.  But most of all, you’ll know your efforts will be going right back into making your local community a better place.

Families need support for many different reasons including postnatal illness, disability, bereavement, mental health, parenting or social isolation. Our support is tailored, personalised, non judgemental and delivered to families in their own homes and through social activities. All our volunteers are DBS checked and attend an eight week training course which covers issues such as confidentiality, safeguarding and working with families. We always need new volunteers and all our volunteers have parenting experience.
