(UK, 204279) Browse eventsInsight Gloucestershire is a charity dedicated to supporting sight impaired and blind people throughout the County. Originally known as Gloucestershire County Association for the Blind (GCAB), the charity was set up in 1858 to help those with failing eyesight. Records indicate that by 1922, the number being cared for was around 600 people. Today, this local charity provides information and support for over 3000 people with significant sight loss. Unfortunately, there is every indication that, due to an ageing population, these numbers will continue to increase year on year. It is predicted that by 2050, the number of people with sight loss in the UK will be nearly 4 million. Every day, 100 people in the UK start losing their sight. Our Aims To support people with significant sight loss in Gloucestershire so they can continue to enjoy their lives and retain their independence. Our aim is to raise awareness of Type 2 Diabetes and to raise vital funding for The Michael Clements Diabetes Centre at Watford General Hospital. Michael Green was a kind and loving husband, father and friend to all, greeting everyone with his smile and warmth. It was devastating for his family and friends when he died, but through this charity, we can prevent others from suffering the same loss and thus create something good from something so tragic. With the first £10k that was raised, we built an educational dietetic kitchen at the diabetes centre at Watford General Hospital as a resource for current diabetes patients and others within our community. Our next major projects include: • providing specialist nurse training at the diabetes centre at Watford General Hospital • providing more specialst equipment for the diabetes centre. We are also in the early stages of producing a recipe book, with dishes that have been specially donated from well-known chefs, with a focus on health and diabetic-friendly foods. The book will also have useful information about diabetes, with some personal accounts from those who have lived with, and reversed their diabetic conditions...truly remarkable accounts! There are many other events planned for the coming months so please check back here regularly to see what's happening. You can also visit our website for news and for updates on our latest activities. Through collaborations with West Herts NHS Trust, The Mayor of St Albans, local business sponsorship and our trusty team of dedicated volunteers, we will continue to spread the word that a healthy lifetstyle will help to prevent Type 2 diabetes. www.michaelgreenfoundation.org Thank you for your kind donation - it is greatly appreciated. ____________________________________________________________ Sunday 13th July British 10K - London Run We have a number of runners taking part in this year's British 10K on behalf of The Michael Green Foundation. (UK, 1130907) Browse eventsLife changing activity & adventure ski holidays for disadvantaged sick and disabled children Katie's Ski Tracks is a registered UK charity that changes young lives by taking children from disadvantaged backgrounds be it through life threatening or life limiting medical conditions, disability or extreme social problems on the unthinkable, a Specialised and Without Parents, Adaptive Adventure Skiing Holiday of a Lifetime to Sudtirol Italy These youngsters are so often excluded from school and family holidays and for some it will unfortunately be the first and last holiday they will ever take. Katie's Ski Tracks was renamed after the late Katie Noctor who helped co-found the charity in 1990. Katie lost her own personal fight to illness when she died of skin cancer in 1993 aged just 30 Katie’s Ski Tracks was born from an idea (a dream) which occurred to Martin Newman whilst working with sick and disabled children in Lourdes South West France in 1987-8. During his free time he would always venture up into the nearby Pyrenees Mountains and partake in his passion for skiing. It was here that he began to realise how very fortunate he was to be so fit and healthy and to be able to enjoy the sheer beauty and the therapeutic values that the mountains could offer him as here any problems or worries always seemed to vanish into insignificance.
