The Fergus Maclay Leukaemia Trust (UK, SC031907) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The Fergus Maclay Leukaemia Trust was set up in 2001 in memory of Fergus who died in November 2000 at the age of 19. The Trust's main aim has been to explore ways of addressing nutritional issues which are a major concern in the treatment of children and young people with cancer. Nutritional problems are a source of great stress for families. The provision of appropriate nutrition to their child is one of the major contributions they can make in the "high-tech" arena of modern cancer therapy The trustees are currently funding a two year project in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh and doctors in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh. The outcomes of the research will produce consolidated information on many aspects of nutrition. This will give doctors the confidence to provide well defined recommendations on nutrition for those young people undergoing treatment for cancer. It is expected that the outcomes of this first project will open up further aspects on nutrition for cancer patients that will require to be addressed; the trustees will therefore require additional funds to continue this much needed work.

It is estimated that in the North East of England there are at least fifty thousand people living with one of the most common fifteen neurological conditions that include multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, Huntington’s disease and acquired brain injury. But care for people with neurological conditions, despite significant investment in health services in recent years and improvements in the speed of diagnosis and quality of acute medical treatment, is characterised by little to no community based treatment and support, very limited access to rehabilitation, poor information, a lack of coordination between services and unnecessary hospital admissions. People with neurological conditions often experience health and social care that is fragmented and disconnected and there are failures in signposting people to existing services that could help them. The impact of this on the lives of individuals, their families, carers, friends and employers is real and damaging. The Northern Neurological Alliance campaigns for improvements that make a difference.
