Through our global education programme, 'Roots & Shoots', young people are encouraged to take positive action to secure the continued survival of the planet. In Africa, we provide training in sustainable land use, tree nurseries, primary healthcare, family planning, AIDS education, water projects, scholarships for girls and micro-credit schemes for women.

We are a 17 bed night hostel, providing temporary accommodation for homeless people in North Hertfordshire. Residents are entitled to a hot evening meal, breakfast and a packed lunch. The hostel amenities include showers, washing and laundry facilities and TV room. North Herts Sanctuary also provides day services to help address the social and health needs of service users. Those using the shelter are assessed for issues such as drug and alcohol dependence, mental health and relationship problems. They are then provided with counselling, advice and a means of referral for treatment. Residents are also given help with regard to finding a permanent home and currently 85% of them move on to live in their own accommodation. They can still attend the Sanctuary on a daily basis for training and guidance sessions. Several have also become volunteers at the Sanctuary.

Salford Loaves and Fishes works in collaboration with Manchester City Mission to provide The Windsor Drop-In Centre. The drop-in centre offers day time shelter to the homeless, vulnerable and isolated from Salford and the surrounding community. As well as providing a warm meal and shower facilities, the drop-in centre offers a wide range of services to the homeless including a Doctor’s surgery, dentistry, laundry facilities and a chance to buy good quality second hand clothes. The clients are also able to access mental health services and drug and alcohol support. The centre has two support workers who can give advice on benefits, housing, make referrals for street homeless and help with dependency issues. The Citizens Advice Bureau offers a weekly surgery and gives advice on a one-to-one basis. Clients can engage in weekly activities including football, arts and crafts, cooking and reading or they can relax or play pool in our lounge. There is also a garden where clients can grow their own produce. The centre supports up to 60 people a day and our aim is to help the homeless and vulnerable to get back on their feet, raise their aspirations and help them to achieve positive and healthy lifestyles.

Corbenic Camphill Community is home to approximately 80 people, 28 of whom are adults with special needs, set in 50 acres of land, it is made of five households and a variety of workshops. Life is shared on an extended family basis, in order to build a community that upholds each individuals sense of integrity, dignity and worth. Corbenic was established in 1978 in Strathbraan near the village of Dunkeld, Perthshire.We aim to ensure that mutual respect and concern for the dignity of each person are actively fostered through ensuring a stable and secure environment and promoting appropriate independence. Mutual support runs through everyday at Camphill, people of all abilities contributing what they can to community life - real inclusion in a real community. We are currently in the process of building a new house for 10 more residents and although we have attracted funding for the build, we need support in the completion of the project, namely equipping and furnishing the house. This newly created accommodation will offer more opportunities for others with special needs to live and work in Corbenic. Windsor Street Angels patrol the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights providing help to anyone who may be vulnerable or in need of support. From water bottles and flip flops for revellers to hot soup and a listening ear to the homeless they are there to provide assistance to anyone on the streets of Windsor. The Angels are also trained in basic first aid so provide assistance or in extreme circumstances call the ambulance. In a typical year we help over 4000 people, distribute 1000 pairs of flip flops, 600 bottles of water, make 47 referrals to other agencies and calm 73 situations. Street Angels operates under the umbrella of Windsor Christian Action (WCA) a local charity operating social projects in Windsor.All three Projects are dependent upon the kind charitable giving from individuals and organisations. The projects depend almost entirely upon the time and energy given by volunteers, who are an awesome team of caring and committed individuals, all of whom are passionate about the aims of the projects and are willing to commit themselves to help the vulnerable and those at risk of vulnerability within our community.
