YTD Raised: £5,242.00Al-Mizan Charitable Trust is a UK funder that supports disadvantaged individuals and families living in poverty through small grants and interest-free loans of up to £500.Recently we funded 24 year old Layla, who is a refugee from war-torn Congo, where she was raped by a militia group at the age of 15 years. She fled her home country, with her grandmother, after her family were killed. Settled in the UK, she married a few years ago, but her husbance was violent towards her. After becoming pregnant, she fled her husband’s home, afraid that her husband’s regular beatings would harm her unborn child. She now lives in a hostel, sharing a room with a crack addict. Layla works 25 hours a week on minimum wage as a cleaner, earning just £152 per week (gross), struggling to meet her basic living costs. She is also paying back the loan for her grandmother’s funeral costs, who passed away last year. She wants to go to college, to improve her English, but government subsidies for ESOL classes have now been cut. She applied to the Trust for £200.Although the UK benefits from a welfare system, the sheer reality is that many fall through the gaps, or simply do not have enough to survive. We need your help to give needy individuals and families, the chance to break the vicious cycle of poverty.

Last year, the Government estimated around 2,414 people sleep on the street on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over three years. Often the reasons for homelessness are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 275 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities.

Home-Start offers support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children, in local communities throughout the UK and with British Forces in Germany and Cyprus. Home-Start offers a unique service, recruiting and training volunteers who are usually parents themselves, to visit families at home who have at least one child under 5 and offer informal, friendly and confidential support. To help give children the best possible start in life, Home-Start supports parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children and widen their links with the local community. Whilst all Home-Start schemes are guided by the same principles, each is an autonomous unit, individually registered with the Charities Commission, and with their own local management committee responsible for their own funding. Home-Start, Epsom Ewell and Banstead has its office in Great Tattenhams and supports over fifty volunteers who visit and support local families in need.

In the Night Shelter the facilities for guests comprise a large dormitory with up to eighteen beds, a dining area, bathrooms with toilet and shower facilities - our aim is to offer a hot meal, a bed for the night and a warm welcome.The Night Shelter is open five nights every week throughout the year. On most nights it is used by between 80 to 100 homeless people and roughsleepers. It is entirely staffed and managed by volunteers.

YTD Raised: £4,326.00Homelessness is devastating, destroying lives and taking away all hope for the future. At Cheltenham YMCA we are committed to helping people at their time of greatest need. We provide a warm bed, a hot shower and, most importantly, a place where they feel safe and secure. Our support team works with each person, guiding, encouraging, supporting and enabling them to return to education, take up vocational training, seek out volunteering opportunities and employment, with the ultimate goal being independent living in the community. Sadly, in recent years we have had to turn away some of the most vulnerable in our society as we do not have the rooms or resources to support them all – many of the people who come to us for help are just 16 or 17 years of age, although we accommodate single people who are much older. Generally homelessness is on the rise and the number of people being accepted as homeless in Cheltenham rose by a massive 109% between 2010 and 2011, and then by a further 78% in 2012. All predictions suggest that this increasing trend is likely to continue. In order to meet this anticipated increased demand and to ensure that we do not have to turn away those who need our help, Cheltenham YMCA has embarked upon an ambitious redevelopment programme, increasing our current provision from 56 rooms to 98. The first phase of this ambitious plan commenced in October 2012. It involves the demolition of our 1950s north wing accommodation block, to be replaced with 73 new, modern en suite rooms. Some of these will be self-contained apartments; others in clusters of 6 or 8 will share communal kitchen and living/dining areas. The cost of this initial phase is £4.1million. We have already raised over 85% of this, but still need £600,000. By making a donation now, you will be playing a vital role in ensuring that in future no vulnerable young person need be anxious about being turned away as there is no room for them at the YMCA. It is estimated that over 4500 previously serving members of the British Armed Forces are sleeping rough in the UK today. With MOD due to be making cuts this figure is going to rise. UK Homes 4 Heroes objectives are: 1. To dedicate hostel style accommodation to our ex service personnel and only them. Providing a safe, clean living environment where they can feel secure and at home. 2. To help gain a permanent home through social housing, assisting through the application and bidding phases. 3. To provide counselling services for people with psychological disorders, i.e. Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Over the short period in which this charity has formed the response we have had from the British Public has been overwhelming. We have had interviews on BBC Radio 5 Live, coverage in the Sun Newspaper and countless updates in our local Paper, The Southwark News. reaction to this Charity has been incredible, we still need more help, more donations, more awareness and above all more support. We have a 16 strong team of dedicated professionals team heading this operation and we will not give up until we succeed. We have the backing of the London Pearly Kings & Queens, one of the oldest charitable institutes in Britain today.
