(UK, 1056864) Browse events“Wheels for Martin’s Friends” raises money for the provision of wheelchairs and other mobility equipment for disabled people within the North Hertfordshire, North Bedfordshire and South Cambridgeshire region. It registered as a charity in 1996, is managed by a small committee and six trustees and is based at the “Three Tuns” pub in Guilden Morden, near Royston in Herts. Since the charity was formed, over £300,000 has been raised through local fund raising events, sponsorship and kind donations. The charity has no overheads and all of the money raised goes directly to those in need of help. While some requests are from local residents, many are referrals from local NHS hospitals. Although the NHS provides basic wheelchairs, it cannot provide the very specialist chairs that those with severe disabilities require, some of these chairs costing up to £20,000. Basic NHS wheelchairs are also heavy and cumbersome and Wheels for Martin’s Friends has provided many lightweight chairs which are more easily self-propelled or easier for parents or carers to manage (but even these cost in excess of £1,500). The charity has also provided special bicycles to enable young children to play with their siblings and friends and special sports wheelchairs to enable young athletes to participate in sports such as basketball. Wheels for Martin’s Friends prides itself on responding quickly to people’s needs and maintaining the support and commitment of the local community.

Through its adaptive sailing programme, The Even Keel Project gives both the able bodied and disabled the opportunity to participate together in a sailing activity that would otherwise be normally outside their reach. The project's philosophy stems from the importance of accessibility, the idea of breaking down barriers and creating a fun and functional environment that will increase participation and challenge individuals with disabilities to achieve more than they thought possible.
