Over that period, approximately 250 young people have enjoyed the 1066 Specials experience, and today there are approximately a hundred registered players at the club, which makes the Specials the largest independent community ‘Special Needs’ football club in Sussex. The 1066 Specials is an FA Chartered Club which is a kite mark that the Football Association awards to Clubs that are well run and sustainable, which place child protection, quality coaching and safety paramount. In 2013 the 1066 Specials were awarded the prestigious honour of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, equivalent to the MBE for voluntary organisations. This most inspiring and aspiring of football clubs have four adult and two junior sides playing in the Sussex Disability League.
