At Maranatha Care Children our belief is that South African orphans, street children and other children and young people at risk, should not be denied the opportunities that every child deserves. We aim to help South African children by offering development in education and life skills, providing a suitable home environment and safeguarding the future of those children and young people in residential care. All children are entitled to grow up in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment. But at Maranatha Care Children we also want to empower children and young people to fulfill their full potential.

The Mulberry Tree Kindergarten and Parent/Toddler group was founded by parents whose children’s needs were central to their decision to provide a Waldorf Steiner Early Years Education. By creating a beautiful kindergarten for our children to work and play in, we encourage them to have a sense of wonder, reverence and love for their environment. Children’s healthy enthusiasm for life is shown in their movement and imaginative play. Kindergarten settings are beautiful; they nourish the young child’s senses and enhance his/her well-being. The kindergarten children play, tidy away, pause, dream, rest and are given songs, rhymes, poems and stories, carefully chosen to accommodate each child within the changing seasons and years. As each child grows and changes the curriculum moves and breathes too, supporting his/her development. The kindergarten is part of the Mulberry Tree Steiner Early Years Group. The Group aims to support the development and the education of young children by helping parents to understand and provide Steiner education. The Group offers opportunities for all children, regardless of race, culture, religion, disability or means, encourages the study of the needs of such groups and acts as a resource centre for news of local and national Steiner events and courses. The Group is also currently developing a Class 1 for 7-year-olds, continuing on from Kindergarten. The Mulberry Tree’s home is the small and welcoming Parish Hall in Cromhall, South Gloucestershire. The kindergarten toys, tables, chairs and equipment are all made from natural materials like wood, beeswax, wool, clay and willow. Steiner Waldorf kindergartens believe it is important for young children to be in touch with the product of the natural world around them.

Phocus as a project is run under St Lukes CARES, currently in Partnership with Mission Direct. Linking local estate youth work with young people aged 14 - 22 years from often very challenging home environments with international expedition to some of the poorest countries in the world, currently Sierra Leone, West Africa. Phocus aims to Create Opportunities 4 Change, enabling local young people to dream bigger dreams for their lives, to know that good things are possible for them, and if they work towards stuff they can achieve it. A belief in innate value, teamwork and the development of life skills sitting at the heart of what we do.Whilst on expedition we link with local grass roots projects, doing building work, working with AIDS orphans, street kids, those with polio and the elderly. Whilst at home in the UK we are based in South Leeds, and work on the estates daily, walking with individuals though the challenges of their lives - high un-employment, high levels of domestic violence, substance misuse, low self esteem and minimal aspirations. As a project Phocus has seen amazing results, increased confidence, better educational choices, apprentiships, university, to name just a few. Our local estates are not easy places to live, but in time I believe that transformation is possible, this will come from the inside out, but it must begin from the outside in. It is fundamental that our kids believe that the are well worth investing in; that they too have much to give."I learnt that happiness isnt something that can be switch on...it is a feeling that you are not on you own & that you are an individually special & cared for person" (Male, 17)."It changed my life. I used to have panic attacks all the time before I went, now I dont. I have gone back to school & control my anger better" (Male, 15).By sponsoring Phocus as a project you will without question be playing a key part in positively transforming peoples lives. Thank you.
