(UK, 1123207) The Lotus Children's Centre Charitable Trust is dedicated to providing care, accommodation support and education to orphaned, abused, and abandoned children in Mongolia. The Lotus Children's Centre was set up in 1993 by Australian Didi Kalika, who started simply by giving food and basic medical care to children living on the streeets of Ulaanbaatar. She soon realised that more was needed, and with the help of friends built a small home for the children in the ger district of Yarmag, on the outskirts of the capital. Harsh economic conditions in Mongolia resulted in more babies and children being abandoned, and the project grew. In 1997 Didi founded a kindergarten, and this was then followed by The Lotus Primary School. Since then Lotus has cared for and educated up to 150 children at any one time, in small family units each looked after by a housemother. As the children have grown up there has been an increasing emphasis on vocational training programmes to prepare them for adulthood. Lotus also runs a Guesthouse in Ulaanbaatar staffed almost exclusively by ex-Lotus children, which not only provides employment as the older children leave school, but also generates profits which contribute towards the running costs of the Centre. In 2009 Didi Kalika was awarded the Order of Australia for her services to the street children of Mongolia.

The group enables children to experience a range of activities that may be just too difficult for them to access on a day-to-day basis, due to behaviour, fear or other reasons. interAKtive organises many exclusive-use events, including swimming, ice skating and climbing, so that the children are alongside others with similar issues, and free of the pressures that come with noisy, crowded public sessions. Many activities are open to the whole family. the interAKtive playscheme, run during the school summer and Easter holidays, gives parents the opportunity to leave their children in the care of experienced and qualified staff, secure in the knowledge that their children are not only happy and safe, but enjoying a whole host of different projects. Parents and carers face both common and different problems, and sharing experiences can be invaluable. In addition to coffee mornings, parents can look forward to the annual conference, which provides speakers who both inform and entertain. interAKtive has been operating since 1994 and has strong links with professionals in the fields of medicine and therapies, and with local specialist schools.

We welcome individual involvement in our projects and encourage visitors to ‘come and see what we are doing’ and feel part of the Star Action family. We aim to personally oversee the way all donations are used so no money is wasted. Although it may seem to be a ‘drop in the ocean’ in the face of great tragedy – such as in Sri Lanka after the tsunami and in the aftermath of the civil war, it is heart warming to forge real heart-links with our families whose lives we have changed. Our children’s orphanage in South India now cares for 23 children who have become our loving family under the care of our fantastic ‘house parents’ Richard and Sasees. They are now pioneering our new Old People’s Home and some of the older children in the orphanage will be helping care for the elderly residents – an extended family indeed. In Ghana (West Africa) our project is community based and aims to help young teenagers train in a skill which will lead to a worthwhile job (instead of wandering the streets of the city). This whole project is being supervised by Fred and Hamida Bote-Kwame who wholeheartedly embrace our family vision.
