Our purpose built, self-funding riding centre was opened in 1989, at Shelley near Hadleigh, in the beautiful Brett Valley eight miles from Ipswich in Suffolk. Although an independent charity, The Shelley Centre is affiliated to The Riding for the Disabled Association. Our aim is to provide riding or carriage driving to benefit the health and wellbeing of adults and children with disabilities. The Centre is run by volunteers including 12 instructors and 2 Able Bodied Whips. The Centre is open five days a week during school term times. Throughout the year we help around 135 individual riders and drivers. Their ages range from between 4 and 50 plus, with many varying degrees of physical, learning and behavioural difficulties.

Most of us are used to taking control of our own lives – deciding how we want to live. For people with learning disabilities, this isn’t always the case. At Yarrow, it is. Now in our 24th year, we constantly push boundaries of conventional support so that people - including those with profound disabilities like Lydia - remain independent. Lydia doesn’t use speech. But she has always enjoyed looking at photographs. So Yarrow has gathered together her favourites and put them on a computer, along with pictures that Lydia has taken herself with a digital camera. Next up, Lydia was introduced to a big red switch to use as a mouse to help her click through her pictures. It took Lydia just three sessions with Yarrow’s support for her to make the connection that pressing the big red switch made the pictures change. Lydia’s photos are organised into categories - activities she enjoys, holidays, day trips, favourite cafes and shopping, so she can choose what she looks at. She now uses the photos to tell us what she wants to do and to live the life she wants to lead. You can see Lydia using the big red switch in the photo gallery.
