Easingwold Branch of Friends of Chernobyl's Children is a registered charity that funds and organises yearly visits for Belarusian children from disadvantaged social backgrounds to the UK, where they stay with host families for temporary recuperative care. The charity targets particularly needy children from seven to twelve years of age, who are often in need of dental and medical attention, education, and tender loving care. The children, from the badly contaminated areas of Belarus, come for one month every year for five consecutive years, which has been shown to have a significant effect up on their overall quality of life, their happiness, health and well-being. Every year the Easingwold Branch of FOCC funds 11 children from Belarus to visit the UK where they are cared for a month by DBS-checked and vetted host families. During their stay, we ensure that the children take part in daily trips and activities that meet their social, health and educational needs. The children return to the same host family for up to five years where possible. The FOCC identifies children aged between seven and twelve who are most at need: children from large families, one-parent families, and foster children. Many of these children live in poverty in contaminated areas and suffer general poor health. We fund a 4-week visit to the UK each year for up to five consecutive years per child. The Help Uganda Trust supports in particular the Children and Young people of St Michael's Children's Home Kampala.  Unlike many charities operating in Africa and Uganda the HUT aims to pay for professional training and/or University places so that each child is capable of fully supporting themselves when they leave the home. It is not just education to sixteen or eighteen and then back on the streets with the need for continued charitable support or alternativily facing the return to extreme poverty. The HUT pays for the day to day expenses of running the home including food, medicine, utilities and staff. There are approximately 85 resident and a further 20 family placed children. In addition to the on-going expenses the Trust pays for the education of approximately 45 of the young people. Other charities and donors pay for the remaining children's education. The children come from a range of ethnic (tribal) and religious backgrounds and it is the home's policy that children are treated equally regardless of background. Most are there because of armed conflict or because of the impact of AIDS. At the home great emphasis is made on teaching the children to respect each other’s religious differences and in the equality of the sexes.  We are particularly proud of our success with young girls and are delighted in the confidence that many have obtained. We are also proud that some of our children have gone on to become doctors, teachers, engineers as well as artists and musicians. All of a sudden the tables were turned and it was Dot who needed care for herself and reassusrance that Eddie would be looked after too. Crossroads were there for Eddie when Dot was in hospital, and are still there for both Eddie and Dot now that Dot has returned home. Our care will continue until Dot is fully recovered. The West Oxfordshire Vetka Association based in West Oxfordshire but with members nationwide supports schools, hospitals and sustainable developments in Vetka District in Belarus. This area is the place in the world worst affected by the nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl disaster. It will be two generations before radiation levels in parts of Vetka District reach acceptable levels and 244,000 years before they return to pre-Chernobyl levels.   This small local charity working in the radiation fallout zone of Vetka, Belarus (White Russia) was formed in 2001 by a small group of people concerned for the welfare and future of a people whose lives had been devastated by the Nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986. The area remains, to this day, one which is struggling with the aftermath. Large areas still remain closed to the population because of the very high radiation levels.   The charity’s current project is to rebuild and refurbish a building used by children with a range of Physical and Mental Disabilities including, Hydrocephalus, Cerebral Palsy, Sight and Hearing problems, and a wide range of learning difficulties.    Photos in the gallery show: 1.
