EDC is a local charity which purchases specialised equipment to help local disabled children. All the money comes from fund-raising and donations and, apart from very small amounts used for essential costs, it is all used to provide help to the children. The Charity is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. EDC gives help to local disabled children who live or attend school in the West Surrey area, or are under the care of the Royal Surrey County Hospital Children’s Unit in Guildford. EDC provides equipment to disabled children to make their lives as full as possible. The equipment enables children to live more comfortably, to play in more creative ways alongside their peers and siblings, to learn more easily or to enjoy more mobility. The equipment provided by EDC is always approved by a professional in the child’s medical caring team to ensure that the item purchased is the most appropriate for the child’s needs. Because the equipment is usually so specialised, and is either tailor-made or adapted exclusively for the child concerned, it is always much more expensive than standard ‘off-the-shelf’ products. For example, tricycles are frequently recommended and give children independence, exercise and the ability to play on equal terms with other children. They cost on average about £800 each. Normally, because of budget limitations or other restrictions, such equipment is either not available from the Health, Education or Social Services or would be so delayed that the necessary benefit to the growing child would be lost. Because each child’s need is different, each applicant receives individual attention. Apart from trikes, other examples of equipment provided in the recent past include walking aids, car seats, other specialised seating systems and buoyancy aids to encourage the children to swim as independently as possible.

The Charlie Harrison Foundation was set up after our son Charlie died due to complications during labour. On average ten babies are stillborn (die after the 24th week of pregnancy) and seven babies die neonatally (die within the first four weeks of life) every day in the UK. This is higher than almost any other high income country. Around 500 babies die every year in the UK as a result of events during labour when the baby does not get enough oxygen. These are clearly some of the most avoidable deaths of all since, if the babys labour had been managed in a different way, the baby might have lived. The money raised by The Charlie Harrison Foundation will be used to: Provide training for midwives and neo-natal nurses Ensure appropriate support is available for parents Buy specialised equipment Initially we will support the hospitals where Charlie was cared for but eventually we hope to extend this to other hospitals in our area, to national charities that fund research and to international charities that support neonatal care in developing countries.

The name Little Aid came from the idea that even the smallest donation could help someone in need. We helped to provide these needs as well as rehabilitate people. Since then Little Aid has expanded to work with local organisations in need of support, to rebuild communities in the poorest parts of Sri Lanka. This includes providing useful medicines to local hospitals, rehousing children who were soldiers in the conflict, opening computer centres for children, providing educational materials such as books to underfunded schools, sponsoring children in education at poorer schools for basic needs such as food, building a well for a fishing community, and many more. We are proud to work with different organisations, different religions, and ethnic backgrounds, bringing people together from all walks of life to help people who are most at need in Sri Lanka..
