The Guild of Friends has been working to support the hospital since 1948. The Guild consists of a small committee of volunteers which incurs only the most minimal of costs so that all monies donated to us go directly to benefit the children in the hospital. The aim of the charity is quite simply to support the welfare of the children in the care of the hospital. We work closely with the hospital management and staff to ensure that we provide the most effective help possible. Each month, we give £1,000 to the social work department which provides subsistence support to families on low incomes whose children are undergoing treatment in the hospital. We fund monthly visits from professional entertainers and magicians who bring fun and laughter to the wards. We support the play department which provides creative and educational activities for both patients and their siblings. We provide the money to buy specialist equipment which is beyond the current resources of the hospital.

The Charlie Harrison Foundation was set up after our son Charlie died due to complications during labour. On average ten babies are stillborn (die after the 24th week of pregnancy) and seven babies die neonatally (die within the first four weeks of life) every day in the UK. This is higher than almost any other high income country. Around 500 babies die every year in the UK as a result of events during labour when the baby does not get enough oxygen. These are clearly some of the most avoidable deaths of all since, if the babys labour had been managed in a different way, the baby might have lived. The money raised by The Charlie Harrison Foundation will be used to: Provide training for midwives and neo-natal nurses Ensure appropriate support is available for parents Buy specialised equipment Initially we will support the hospitals where Charlie was cared for but eventually we hope to extend this to other hospitals in our area, to national charities that fund research and to international charities that support neonatal care in developing countries.
