Butterflies is a local charity which has been in existence since 1975. Our remit is to help children (up to the age of 18) who are disabled and who live in West Dorset and/or use the support of the DCHFT Children’s Centre in Dorchester. The charity was previously known as “Earlybirds”. Since our formation, we have helped many children and young people with a disability by funding items such as specialised tricycles, beds, mattresses, weighted blankets, buggies, car seats, harnesses and a range of leisure equipment. We have also helped to provide specialised communication aids and sensory toys. This specialised equipment is needed and used to enhance and support the children’s development needs. The children we help have a wide range of disabilities. Following receipt of an application form, we assess if and how we can help and allocate funds appropriately.

The Guild of Friends has been working to support the hospital since 1948. The Guild consists of a small committee of volunteers which incurs only the most minimal of costs so that all monies donated to us go directly to benefit the children in the hospital. The aim of the charity is quite simply to support the welfare of the children in the care of the hospital. We work closely with the hospital management and staff to ensure that we provide the most effective help possible. Each month, we give £1,000 to the social work department which provides subsistence support to families on low incomes whose children are undergoing treatment in the hospital. We fund monthly visits from professional entertainers and magicians who bring fun and laughter to the wards. We support the play department which provides creative and educational activities for both patients and their siblings. We provide the money to buy specialist equipment which is beyond the current resources of the hospital.
