Our station is run entirely by volunteers with the aim of relieving the stress and boredom of a hospital stay, by providing a lively mix of music, information and chat, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Research shows that 79% of patients listened or planned to listen whilst in hospital.Research also shows that Hospital Radio saves the NHS up to £400 per patient, per day by helping to aid recovery.The service is free to patients and we get no funding from the NHS so we rely on donations to help maintain and develop the valued service. (UK, 285099) Charlton Toy Library was founded by parents in 1982... but it is so much more than just a toy library! We provide a wide-ranging family support service which helps improve the quality of life of very disadvantaged children and their parents and carers. We reach over 250 families per year living within the London Borough of Greenwich. Many suffer cultural, social and/or economic disadvantage. Many live in isolation. Through CTL’s inter-linked services, they can access the unaffordable missing resources so essential to their children’s safety and development and, more importantly, they can receive the advice and support they need to reduce isolation and stress levels. We provide: a mobile outreach service to a women’s refuge, to isolated families & to groups in hard-to-reach areas; a low-cost, educational and multi-cultural toy & book loan scheme which promotes pre-school numeracy, literacy and creative learning; a child safety equipment loan scheme to improve child safety within the home; advice, support and counselling to parents and carers on child development, parenting skills, breast-feeding and much more; a safe, welcoming inclusive space for members and their children to socialise; information and multi-cultural days; a sign-posting service to other local child-related services; volunteering opportunities. We support women who are pregnant, due to give birth or are new mums in detention at HMP Holloway and seek to reduce feelings of alienation and estrangement at a time that should be a milestone in their lives. We also support women in similar circumstances, who have either been released from prison or are living in the community and are at risk of being detained. We provide trained, compassionate and experienced birth companions to women who are vulnerable, isolated and may have no other means of support. Our overall aim is to improve the experience of pregnancy, birth and motherhood for women and ensure the best possible start in life for their new-born babies.
