YTD Raised: £0.00

The Transport Benevolent Fund (TBF) is a charity registered in England and Wales (no. 1058032) and in Scotland (no. SCO40013). It was set up to support those who work in the public transport industry in Great Britain when they are in need, hardship or distress. For £1 per week (which can be deducted from members’ pay at source), we offer a wide range of benefits including: Cash grants and advice Legal advice (but not on employment matters) Counselling Convalescence Recuperation Osteopathy Chiropractic treatment Reflexology Acupuncture Other complementary treatments Medical equipment and living aids Homeopathy and herbal medicine Hypnotherapy Second opinions Scans and tests Prescription season tickets Physiotherapy Chiropody (for working members) While the fund is governed by a Trust Deed, it is run democratically. Local Committees appoint a Council, which in turn elects the Trustees. These Trustees control the charity; they are responsible for the fund’s safe custody and the provision of benefits. The Trustees appoint a Director for day-to-day management of the charity. The Director in turn appoints staff to help him run the charity on behalf of the Trustees. As well as appointing Council members to oversee the running of the TBF, Local Committees discuss all TBF matters and consider requests for financial help from members within their areas. TBF is thus a democratic organization with Trustees who are accountable to the membership. This is the main reason we are different to many other organizations.

Heal Romania (UK, 1117435) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The end of communism has left Romania 8 times poorer than 10 years ago with 44% of Romanians living in poverty. Many families live in one or two room flats in high rise blocks, usually with their parents, siblings, husband and their own children all crammed into a tiny space. Work is hard to find. Facing extreme poverty, many parents resort to home-made alcohol. Their children face the resulting brutality and either run away to beg on the street, or are sent by their parents to beg for money for more alcohol. The children form groups to beg in underground stations and shopping areas, often sleeping underground next to the hot water pipes to keep warm. Every 5th Romanian Child is Exploited: some 900,000 of the approximately 5 million children of Romania are forced into extremely hard manual labour. HEAL Romania is an organisation that attempts to offer aid to children that live in poverty in the capital city of Bucharest in Romania. This aid may come in the form of food, medical supplies, jobs assisting street children and families in finding alternative places to live. Money is raised in England is then sent every month to a sister organisation called ‘Impreuna la scoala’, which is also run by the trustees of HEAL Romania along with a Romanian social worker called Ana Doina. Ana is a trained social worker with over 20 years experience and her understanding of the children living on the streets in Romania make her invaluable. Ana Doina has excellent working relationships with other established organisations in Bucharest that allow us to use their facilities temporarily. At present HEAL Romania is fundraising for a building of its own. Our plan is to open a day centre for street children and poor families to attend with our offices based here allowing those in need to drop in. Leading eventually to gain the funds to also open a night shelter. The mayor of the area in which we work has offered to help. But we not only need to raise enough for the building but also the monthly running costs to sustain such a project.
