Established following the War of Independence (1949), today, more than 51,000 members are given a new lease of life at our facilities in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beer Sheva. It remains the only official organisation providing such services and the only organisation that provides such facilities to all veterans and victims of terror without reference to background or cause of injury.

Services provided by our Hospitals, Clinics and Mobile Outreach Unit revive education and employment prospects, and contribute to economic growth and rebuilding the fractured infrastructure. We treat patients regardless of ethnicity, religion or ability to pay. Our work changes lives. Core activities now include: • The East Jerusalem Eye Hospital• The Hebron Eye Hospital• The Gaza Clinic• The Anabta Clinic• Mobile Outreach Programme• Training local Doctors and Nurses. Although 80% of all blindness is preventable, much of it caused by poor diet, diabetes and cataracts, the people of the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT) have a rate of blindness ten times higher than in the West. Poverty levels are high. The West Bank is home to some 700,000 refugees and 51.8% of all families live on less than US$3.15 per person per day. We cuurently support 36 Palestinian women in the Gaza Strip by paying their university entrance fees. Whilst based in Sheffield we have supporters across the UK, in particular in Bolton and Saddleworth where sister organisations raise funds under the name of the Fund.

The work of The Friends is financed by fundraising, membership subscriptions, donations and the surpluses made by The Friends' cafe and shop. The Friends supplement the services provided by the Royal Marsden Hospital to its patients, families and staff by contributing to the provision of facilities and equipment plus minor hospital refurbishments which will benefit the health, welfare and comfort of patients. Funds raised by The Friends fund the purchase of equipment for the hospital including defibrillators, wheelchairs, ventilators, bloodpressure monitors, funds for research as well as items to enhance the care, comfort and environment for patients. Over the last 30 years, The Friends has contributed some £2.7 million to the hospital.
