The Jamie Devaney Memorial Fund (UK, 1151236) Browse events

YTD Raised: £9,797.68

Jamie’s Fund has been established to provide resources to improve the care for people with mental illness in Uganda. It is in memory of Jamie Devaney who died in 2011, after falling ill while on a family holiday and fund raising trip in Uganda. He was only four years old, but during those years Jamie brought immense joy and pleasure to his family, and everyone else who was fortunate enough to know him.Mental illness tends to be neglected compared to physical illnesses in Uganda. People with severe mental illness are often misunderstood and badly treated and the great majority have no hope of receiving appropriate treatment. As a low-income country, Ugandan health services are limited and resources for mental health are pitifully small. In UK the health spend per person is around £2000 per year: In Uganda it is £6 and only 1% of this is spent on mental health. Jamie’s Fund is working with other organisations to raise the status and standards of mental health care.

We provide funds to promising young athletes when they really need it most; right at the start of their career. Early encouragement, support and funding significantly increases the chance of a young person achieving their potential. Lack of finance should not be a barrier so disabled and able-bodied athletes are encouraged to apply for funding to help cover the costs of  their training. Anyone can apply as long as their club and coaches sanction their application and their sport is recognised by Sport England. Athletes complete the application on our website detailing their training goals and the costs associated with them. Once approved each athlete has their own page on our website and on Virgin Money Giving, where they can showcase their talent and individuality. You support the athletes of your choice; friends, family, school mates, club members, the wider sporting public, in fact anyone can help.  All donations are collected by us and then distributed to the athletes in accordance with their financial needs detailed in their application.  We don't charge a penny, relying on your generosity to fund the charities running costs.
