Land's End to John o' Groats on Behalf of the Stoa School Why? Lily has a diagnosis of autism, hyper activity disorder and learning disabilities. She is a fun, happy, inquisitive, and affectionate individual who has just started an additional needs high school. She speaks (reluctantly) in short bursts, but is still unable to write her name or understand counting. She can swim and ride a bike, she loves her dance class and cooking. She loves wrestling with her brother and adores her big sister, her pets and watching You Tube clips on her IPad.She still needs some support to dress, wash, remember to go to the toilet, stay on the pavement, not run away or grab other people/ things when out. Lily will never drive a car, she will never go to university, she won’t have a family of her own, but she has the potential to learn to manage her personal care, live with support as part of society, have a simple job and be valued as a member of the wider community. Without the relevant education she may instead spend her adult life in a care home, further isolated from, and a burden to, society. There are many children and families like ours in Scotland, who are entitled to a brighter future, a future which ABA/VA may be able to provide. About The School Stoa School aims to make a real difference to one of the most disadvantaged groups of children, namely children with autism who also have learning difficulties and a high level of communication and behavioural needs. We are opening as a day school for children with a diagnosis of autism to implement a method of education called “Applied Behaviour Analysis”. This is a form of education widely recognized across the world to be particularly effective for children with low functioning autism and the behavioural and communication challenges this entails There are an increasing number of ABA Schools in England, all of which have excellent OFSTED reports and we believe Scottish children deserve the same quality of educational opportunity. We also believe that access to this education should be available to all and not just those who can afford it, therefore we aim to establish Scotland’s first ABA/VB school. We need your support to make this happen.
This Life Cambodia is focused on educational development that directly benefits the lives of children, youth and their communities in Cambodia. We believe that every child has the right to free, high-quality education. Without an education or training, a child is immediately disadvantaged and far less likely to achieve their true potential. At This Life Cambodia we focus on working with communities to develop projects that provide or enhance educational opportunities and directly benefit the lives of children and their communities in Cambodia. Our programs provide an opportunity for communities to develop the essential infrastructure, skills and programs needed to make positive change in their lives and break free from poverty. Goals: To listen to individuals and communities define their own needs and solutions. To engage individuals and communities to organise for their own needs through sustainable, accountable, and socially just processes. To advocate alongside communities so citizens are empowered to challenge inequality. The Lower Secondary School Development Program (LSSDP) has been implemented as a means to creating sustainable solutions for education needs in economically disadvantaged and under-served communities. The LSSDP centres on empowerment and community ownership. The ultimate goal of school development is to work with the community and to build capacity for long-term, sustainable self-sufficiency and improved access to and quality of secondary education in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Cambodia does not have a juvenile justice system. Children aged 14-18 are tried in the adult criminal justice system and are subsequently detained and imprisoned in adult prisons. This Life Beyond Bars (TLBB) aims to bring together individuals, families, communities and existing sub-national structures to build awareness, knowledge and capacity for sustainable action on issues relating to the criminal justice system in Cambodia. TLBB strives to address the educational rights of children affected by the legal justice system in Siem Reap and Banteay Mancheay prisons, and to promote and defend these rights. TLBB achieves its goal through three program areas: Vocational Training, Family Capacity Building and Community Development. The Community Responses to Violence Against Women Team is working closely with the Chi Kraeng Commune on their identified priorities within the areas of Local Authority, the Lower Secondary School and Community Education. We are providing training and workshops to increase the knowledge and confidence of the Local Authority in responding to incidences of Domestic Violence; working with the Lower Secondary School providing technical advice and direction to teachers and School Support Committee and are working with the Child Club on a peer support and education program focussing on healthy relationships, gender equality and encouraging important conversations about the impacts of violence; in addition to creating opportunities for wider community involvement in events highlighting gender equity, healthy relationships, and non violence. The Community Research and Consultancy Program (CRCP) provides information and services on issues affecting the provision of public education and human rights in Cambodia to the communities, NGOs, government ministries, academics and the general public at large. Through the activities of CRCP, which compile the knowledge of This Life Cambodia, more people and organisations are better prepared, equipped and able to make informed decisions about educational development issues.
