Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project is a charitable body which for 20 years has provided a befriending service to young people aged 8-18 who have been referred by a variety of agencies, predominantly Social Services, Education and NHS. The Project matches vulnerable young people with trained adult volunteers in order to enable them to cope with particular pressures in life and divert them, where appropriate, away from statutory measures of care, social services or criminal justice intervention. Our overall aim is to support and enrich the lives of vulnerable young people across Dumfries and Galloway, through Befriending. Some key activities towards achieving this overall aim are to; -promote friendship and a caring relationship between adult volunteer befrienders and young people in need of support -recruit, train and support volunteers over 18 years of age to become volunteer befrienders -carefully match young people to a volunteer befriender -evaluate the progress made in the young person through goals set on an individual basis DGBP is the only service, as far as we are aware, that provides a befriending service to children and young people 8 to 18 years, in the region through unpaid volunteers. The client group are all vulnerable young people and, on average, over 80 benefit from having a volunteer befriender each year. Being so well established, no advertising of the service takes place, with a waiting list of around 40 young people hoping to be matched with a volunteer befriender. Some quotes from young persons: Before befriending, I didn’t like going to school and I didn’t go outside. E really helped me with my problems. I learned that I could do things I never thought I could. I am not a recluse anymore. I have friends, an active social life and I’m busy and happy. It gave me a big boost. Mum always commented on me looking happier when I came back with A. My befriender makes me happy, helps me be good and makes me smile.
