The Sikh Awareness Society (SAS) was established in 1998 amongst growing concerns of the ‘grooming’ of our youth. In Britain today Sikh youth are still actively targeted on the basis of their religion and history. This historically linked hate-crime causes much emotional distress to the families involved with the majority of these cases ending up in abuse. Under common Punjabi mentality, these issues are still considered ‘taboo’ and are rarely addressed by the Gurdwara Sahibs, and Sikh community leaders. Therefore the victims of this hate-crime tend to suffer in silence. The SAS was initially set up to deal with these issues. Since 1998 the SAS has grown to tackle many more issues affecting the Sikh community and the Sikh youth in Britain today. We are now regarded as a leading independent Sikh advisory board, speaking for the concerns of the Sikh Sangat. The SAS originally operated as a discreet, confidential service, providing counselling and support to the West Midlands Sikh community. Due to an increasing number of calls from distressed Sikh families; in April 2006 we decided to expand our services and go nationwide, to address the Sikh Sangat to the issues and problems facing our community. We initially started out in ‘problem areas’ i.e. towns/cities where we knew of serious hate-crimes and abuse in the past. We quickly came to realise it is a national problem and far more deep-rooted.
Located on the edge of the busy market town of Harleston in South Norfolk, the Harold Dean Charity (HDC) owns two of the Fishing Lakes at the Weybread Pits in Mid Suffolk, the Number 1 and Middle Pit and currently leases a third and the largest: the Ocean. The Ocean Lake has now been put up for sale. We are currently fundraising to complete an Option to purchase the Ocean before 31 December 2025. We have raised funding pledges of £243,000 but still need a further £172,000 to complete our purchase option in time. Success will see us continuing to shoulder the main responsibility for this unique site and will ensure that the community can enjoy access in perpetuity. Through its active stewardship of the lakes in partnership with the Harleston and Wortwell District Angling Club, the Weybread Sailing Club and other individuals and agencies HDC has also been able to keep this natural haven intact for more than half a century for the enjoyment of many hundreds of local people. Recognised as an important site for wildlife, it has been designated a County Wildlife Site, there is nowhere comparable in this part of East Anglia. The modest surplus generated from the current activities are distributed to local charities by HDC.
The Heart and Lung Transplant Trust (Victoria) Inc. is a not-for-profit association whose membership consists of heart and lung transplant patients, recipients, their carers and families. Our vision is for a bright and active future for all those involved with or in need of a heart or lung transplant. We actively encourage organ donation and support The Alfred Hospital Melbourne, the transplant team, patients, recipients, their families and carers throughout the journey. Formed in 1994, five years after The Alfred Hospital performed its first pioneering heart transplant, HLTTV is managed by a committee of dedicated volunteers who have each experienced the heart or lung transplant journey. We are a partner of DonateLife and are a Deductible Gift Recipient, so donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible.
