Trees are a key ingredient in the fight against extreme poverty. They help heal degraded landscapes and improve agricultural productivity. They also provide a diversity of products such as firewood, fodder and fruits, which can reduce the risk for many farm families that depend solely on grain crops for survival. Through agroforestry many of the world's poorest people can move beyond subsistence lifestyles. Beyond Subsistence currently works in Niger, Uganda, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe.

Schemes warning against or preventing substance abuse, bullying, intruder crime and theft are frequent submissions for awards. Awards fall into two categories, - those set up and managed by the group members themselves, or - those set up for group members by adults. All youth groups up to the age of 25 are included.
