The Edinburgh University Air Squadron Association has been established by former pilots of the squadron to raise funds to commemorate the life and achievements of one of our former members, Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown RN, who died in Feb 2016 aged 97. Born in Leith, brought up in the Borders, then educated at the Royal High School and Edinburgh University where he studied German, Eric Brown trained to fly at RAF Turnhouse in 1939. At the outbreak of WW2 he joined the Fleet Air Arm where he was given the nickname ‘Winkle’ because of his modest stature. There followed a most distinguished flying career during which he flew a world record of 487 different aircraft types and achieved another world record for 2,407 deck landings on aircraft carriers. He became the Royal Navy’s Chief Naval Test Pilot and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Edinburgh University. The aim of the fund-raising for this charity is to provide a bronze statue at Edinburgh Airport and to fund Flying Scholarships, to enable some of today’s youngsters to experience the life enhancing benefits of learning to fly which is just what Winkle would have wanted. It feels good to give, so please donate towards commemorating the life and of this great man and to inspiring some of today's youngsters to learn to fly.
