Vigilance is a piece of living Brixham history. The last sailing trawler to be built at Upham’s Yard in 1926, she worked with the local fishing fleet until the mid 30’s. During the Second World War she saw service as a barrage balloon mooring vessel. ‘Vigilance’ is of recognised national importance. She is registered as UK Historic Vessel, number 741 and is part of the UK Historic Fleet.‘Vigilance’ is unique within the local fleet of heritage vessels in Brixham because she is owned and run by a consortium of volunteers in a ‘not for profit manner’ and is used solely for the benefit of the local community and the visitors to the Torbay area. This is confirmed by our Mission Statement, namely :- “To maintain the heritage of our Brixham Sailing Trawler, “Vigilance of Brixham”, for the people of Brixham and the visitors to Brixham and Torbay. Friends of The Vigilance's Main Aims are: - To advance the preservation and conservation of the Brixham-based heritage sailing trawler “Vigilance BM76”, for public benefit - To advance education for the public benefit and community of Brixham, including the provision of specialist trips and programmes for local disadvantaged groups - Advancement and social engagement of the Brixham Community via all of the Friends of Vigilance activities, events, sailing programmes and heritage preservation initiatives - Run and managed solely by volunteers who actively encourage new volunteers to join in and participate, regardless of past experience and skills (as training is provided)
We believe no one in our community should be without access to quality healthcare. BJVIM provides free medical care to people 18 and older without health insurance. Our volunteers are compassionate and professional and place an emphasis on preventive medicine and health education.
