We are an innovative charity (awarded "Ian Livingstone Innovations in Gaming Award") who use evidence-based therapeutic games to reduce social isolation, and improve well-being in vulnerable groups (such as people experiencing homelessness, neurodivergent young people, and military veterans.
We are a hybrid of a food bank and a food rescue operation. We collect surplus food from supermarkets and offer it to all through our community fridges. We also help more vulnerable individuals who find themselves in hardship, by providing boxes of predominantly fresh produce on a weekly basis.
Every penny helps the museum team keep our soldiers' stories alive - and share them far and wide. £10 pays for conservation equipment £50 pays for us to deliver a workshop £100 pays for a digital assistant to develop our online galleries £300 pays for 3D scanning of artefacts
The Gordon Howard MBE Memorial Trust was set up in 2018 in memory of Major Gordon Howard, who dedicated his life to caring for the elderly in Zimbabwe. With the founder Sir Athol Evans, he set up and grew the Athol Evans Hospital Home (now Athol Evans Complex) from a small frail care ward to a unique facility in Harare offering three levels of care to those who are sick, elderly, frail and vulnerable, and those in need of respite and rehabilitation. He campaigned for the elderly in Zimbabwe and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of pensioners, ultimately being recognised for his work with an MBE from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. The Trust was set up after Major Howard’s death to support the work that he started by supporting homes in Zimbabwe which in turn care for the elderly. Pensioners in Zimbabwe have suffered immensely over the years due to hyperinflation, and ongoing economic difficulties. Unfortunately there are little or no social services to help older people and many rely on care homes to survive. These homes rely on funding and donations to keep going.
We provide weekly deliveries of fresh food, household essentials, and hygiene products. We work with 6 local schools who refer families that may need short or long-term support. We’re committed to helping any family with children attending Balerno High, Currie High, Currie Primary, Dean Park Primary, Nether Currie Primary and Juniper Green Primary.
