Withymead Nature Reserve provides an oasis for nature and is a hidden gem for anyone interested in wildlife, whether ornithologists, ‘moth-ers’, photographers, artists, Forest Schools and interested passers by on the Ridgeway. The Anne Carpmeal Trust (ACCT) owns and manages Withymead Nature Reserve, 13 acres of rare reed-bed habitat along the Thames on the edge of Goring. The reed-beds provide important habitat flora and fauna for resident and migratory birds including the reed bunting, reed warbler and citti’s warbler and supports butterflies, moths and other insects, and Withymead’s signature flower, the Loddon lily. The site was also home to Saunders Boat Builders for over 30 years, before Sam Saunders moved to the Isle of Wight to set up Saunders and Roe in 1929. Through the woodland and reed beds, remnants of it’s past can be seen, inclduing the old slipway. We also own Tara’s Piece, and Little Meadow which is open all year-round and where the Thames Path passes through.
