(UK, 526088) Browse eventsGalloway’s Society for the Blind was established in 1867 and now provides advice, support, specialist equipment and a wide range of activities to over 6000 blind and visually impaired people across Lancashire Sefton. Galloway's works hard to enable blind and visually impaired people to maintain their independence, regain their confidence and minimise the effects of living with reduced vision. Operating from 4 Sight Advice Centres based in Penwortham, Chorley, Morecambe and Southport the Society strives to reach out and provide an accessible local service. We pride ourselves on being big enough to cope but small enough to care. Galloway’s need to raise £850,000 each year to continue running its services, this is something we simply could not do without the support of the general public who so kindly volunteer, donate and leave legacies. (UK, 1159964) Browse eventsIn 2013 the staff of Pound Gates and Sevatas started to support an Ipswich based charity called Kenyan School Fund. The Fund was running a school in Mombasa with the desire to build a new school in Nyiera, western Kenya. During 2014 the businesses organised two events specifically to raise funds for this new school and in November 2014 building of the school commenced. In January 2015 we established The Soma Leo Foundation and registered it with the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Soma Leo took on the responsibility to raise the funds necessary to establish the school, invest in further phases of development and meet its ongoing running costs. Soma Leo is Swahili. It translates as “learn today”. The name has in part been selected by the community we will initially be supporting. The school is called Soma Leo Nyiera Academy. Following a Trustee visit to Kenya in September 2015 we have identified additional priorities to support other schools near Nyiera, in an area called Osieko, and generally help the wider community which suffers with severe poverty. Directors, managers and staff at Pound Gates and Sevatas are involved with the charity either as Trustees or by providing all the administrative resources the charity requires. We aim to contribute significantly to human health and wellbeing. Our vision is to save lives, by preventing and curing many diseases including arthritis, cancer, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes type-2, osteoporosis, mental health, obesity and dementia. Menzies conducts research that relies on the unique, stable base that characterises Tasmania's population. We also undertake nationwide studies and collaborate with interstate and international researchers. Our context is an island community that has limited funding for health care and specific challenges relating to disadvantage. Our researchers take a 'bench-to-bedside' approach, which means we translate the knowledge we gain into health policies, training and recommendations for treatment. We also work with commercial partners to develop and apply our discoveries. Finally, we educate and train future research scientists, clinicians and health professionals. Menzies is dedicated to continuing to improve the health outcomes for all Tasmanians. We are grateful and proud that the Tasmanian community embraces Menzies.
