(UK, 1166416) Browse eventsIn May 2015 Hannah Francis was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer. At the time Hannah was 17 years old and intent on pursuing her dream of riding at the top level of eventing. The diagnosis initially gave some hope with extensive use of chemotherapy, but, as Hannah says “now we know it is more likely to be a case of keeping on dreaming big, fighting hard and never, ever giving up – no matter what this evil disease continues to throw at us”. In the last year she has turned her overwhelming determination to, as she puts it, “#kickingcancersbutt” and inspiring people with her drive and determination. But she doesn’t do it alone. Shortly after her diagnosis Hannah was given a stuffed toy pony, to become known as Willberry the Wonder Pony. Now Hannah and Willberry devote much of their time and energy to raising money for charity and what started as a local effort to raise funds to buy Hannah a decent wig after losing her hair, is now a formal charity – Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony Charity – established and driven by Hannah to raise funds for bone cancer research and to grant equine related wishes to seriously ill people and their families. And she says that, long term, the charity will be her legacy, “Even when the day comes that I won’t be able to get up in the morning I want you to continue to keep fighting for me so together we can beat cancer.”
