Youth Challenge Oxfordshire (YoCO) is a new charity running a youth group programme for vulnerable young people aged 14-21. The programme of weekly meetings develops their self-confidence and resilience and includes a residential weekend in the UK and a volunteering 10 day expedition to Western Kenya. Here the challenge for the YoCO team is to work with the Nasio Trust to improve the lives of orphaned Kenyan children by building homes, working in schools or in the fields. The young people must fund raise for this trip developing their team skills and confidence; their challenge is to raise at least £800 each. After Kenya, YoCO help the young people to use their new found confidence and sense of self-worth to embark on further education, apprenticeships or employment.

The Salaam Centre is the first of its kind in the UK, an inclusive community centre with dedicated prayer facilities and community facilities open to everyone such as a restaurant, sports halls, gender specific gyms, lecture theatre, children's play area and much more.Bridging the gapModern life makes is increasingly difficult for families to spend quality time together. The Salaam Centre offers facilities for everyone regardless of age and will be an 'oasis of belonging' for all generations.Keeping the Islamic heritage aliveOur Islamic heritage is central to our lives and will underpin everything we do at the Salaam Centre. Furthermore we believe our values can transcend boundaries and bring us closer to our friends and neighbours in the UK. Creating an environment of openness will allow meaningful interaction with wider society and correct the sometimes false, negative image of Islam. Holistic and SereneAmid the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the Salaam Centre will offer a haven of reflection and tranquility immersed in an Islamic environment. The facilities at The Salaam Centre are designed to nurture new expressions of religion and a better understanding of Islam through innovative methods and free expression.Make a differenceIt has been a long road from the project’s first inception to gaining planning permission from the Local Authority in January 2011. £3M has been raised for this project and the project’s overall construction cost is £8M. This figure may seem ambitious but the Salaam Centre offers something unique that has the potential to transform the community and radically re-orientate the relationship between Muslims and the wider society in the West, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
